SEW THE TRENDS SPRING: PART 1
Spring is in the air and you know what that means, sew the trends is back. I’ve hit the high street to hunt out the key looks for this season so that you guys can sew them. As the weather has been TERRIBLE in the UK I think some of the shops have been holding back some of their more summery pieces. Here is the video where I talk though my finding and all the images and links to the patterns are below.
Let’s start with colour, this is the key colour palette for summer and I have to say I’m really loving it. Creams, beiges and blacks have moves through from winter to spring and with it some lovely new genlte colours. This lovely powdery icy blue was seen everythere alongsine a deep olive colour then add a most pink and a pop of red (carried over from winter) and there you have it. The great thing is these colours all look great with each other. There was very little print from summer… in fact apart from a stripe I barely saw any.
These are some of the key trends from the grown up who work in fashion. I did my research before I hit the high street and definetly saw a lot of the these that had filtereed down from the catwalks. Stealth wealth. Essentially wearing really sinmple shapes that look really expensive, layering simple pieces together and the mix of textures make it look expensive.
Subversive officewear… I thought this was a really funny name but as soom as I went into the shops the may the mannequins were styled with this in mind. Again simple and understated… imagine working in an office in the 90s and you are there.
Last was the classic preppy. I liked this trend as I feel most people own a couple of items that could be pulled out od your wardrobe. Lots of stripe shirts under jumpers and these fantastic knitted polo shirts.. more on those later.
Outerwear:
Lets start with the bomber jacket, i really like that these camein lots of stlyes, big and boxes, cropped and many of them with pockets on too. THe fabrication varied as much as the style from knitted pieces, neoprene to padded. I liked the pieces that could be worn as a layering pieces rather than specifically outerwear.
In terms of the patterns for the bigger boxy shaped bomer then the Vinny jacket from Fibre Mood is a great option. If you prefere you bomers cropped and a little more fitted them the Maker’s Atelier is the one for you. For those enjoying the idea that it’s more like a cardigan than and jacket then the Lenaline Arthur is a jersey pattern. It also has loads of great pocket options to play around with.
Next up we have the oversized trench, a classic style that featured heavily. Think big and boxy in all the classic shades you’d expect and I really love the blue version from John Lewis.
For the patterns, the McCall’s 8246 is a very close option, big and boxy with loads of great details. If you are looking for a simpler sew then the Kara trench from Bara Studios is a paired back option with less detailing. I also included the Sybil trench from Vickisews as I loved some of the trench features.
We aren’t done with the trench…. alongside the boxy trench was the cropped. I was really happy to see this style as I think it looks great with loads of outfits.
For these patterns I would recommend sizing up as you want a boxy fit. The Merchant and Mills Denham jacket is a great option, you might want to make this slightly shorter. The other pattern is the Sew Over It Suraya, it’s got loads of great trench details and doesn’t have any fastenings.
Tops:
I love an oversized shirt and I’m in luck this season because they were everywhere. Styled with lots of different items and worn open over t-shirts made me think you’d get a lot of wear out of it.
I couldn’t decide between these three so I’ve put them all in. First up is the Closet Core Jenna shirt, this might be my favourite of the three, the proportions are perfect. For something a little longer and boxier the Oversized shirt from The Assembly Line. Finally the Olivia from Bara Studio which is a little softer and closer to a blouse but still boxy.
Next up we have the knitted polo shirt. I will add that most of these were knitwear pieces but I think we could recreate them in jersey.
I’ve got three options for you, fist up is the Fibre Mood Amber top, loose fitting with grown on sleeves. Then we have the Style Arc Raph which is really close to the & Other Stories version. Finally, we have the Juliana Martejevs Pippa polo, I think this would need to me cut a little smaller to create the same silhouette.
Last for this week we have the boxy-T and when I say boxy I mean boxy! The proportions of the sleeves on this made it really interesting to me and I’ve got two great pattern suggestions.
First up The Sewing Workshop Maison top this let like a really good match and you get the joggers included in the pattern. The Tessuti Myka is also a fantastic option featuring a raglan sleeve.
I hope you enjoyed the first week of sew the trends make sure you come back next Saturday for part 2…
