THE GREAT BRITISH SEWING BEE 2024 – SERIES 10 GET THE LOOK

All good things must come to an end (sob!) but we aren’t ready to let go of the joy that the Great British Sewing Bee series 10 has brought us just yet. We eagerly watched everything the contestants made (while jotting ideas into our sewing inspiration notebooks) and relished the challenges the judges set. They seem to get tougher each year.

If you are a purist and want to try to recreate the challenges from series 10 of the Sewing Bee, check out our sewing pattern picks for each episode – with a coordinating chatty video to enjoy!

We know lots of you have also been eyeing up some of the outfits that judge Esme Young, presenter, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and the finalists wore on the show, so we’ve found some patterns for recreating the looks if you fancy! You might want to grab a huge cup of tea for this lot… it’s a bumper blog post!

Ailsa brought it in the style stakes. She cleverly weaves her Scottish heritage into what she wears and isn't afraid of putting her own stamp on things. Ailsa was my indie-pattern-queen of the year, kicking off with repping Merchant & Mills twice which had the Fold Line team very excited.

If you look closely at Ailsa's garments, she has a really interesting way of styling them, whether it be using kilt pins to transform the silhouette of her finale kilt or the refashioned shirt of dreams, I can't wait to see what she gets up to next.

We think Ailsa has had a bit of a love affair with zero waste sewing patterns. We suspect she used the book for a couple of looks, but the dress she wore on episode 4 looks like the ZW Soft Blouse lengthened into a dress. We squealed when we spotted she was wearing the Merchant & Mills Ellis/Hattie Dresses while sewing their Etta Dress and then she wore her own version the following week!

My favourite look has to be Ailsa's finale outfit. The Merchant & Mills Miller Waistcoat is a great option if you crop it like Ailsa did and add an extra welt pocket up top for clever specs storage. If you loved the kilt, the Folkwear 152 Kilt is a great choice, but don't forget to stock up on kilt pins if you want to give it a little Ailsa flair!

Luke was a pretty unflappable contestant and their outfits are the epitome of breezy. Luke rocked a laid-back co-ord and is clearly a whizz at whipping up a shirt... I would actually love to peek inside their wardrobe to see how many there are.

Luke brought their skills as a drag artist to the challenges creating some cleverly constructed looks that just jumped off the screen. Their Gaga stage outfit for Diva week (episode 8) was absolutely iconic. I think there is plenty more of this to come so do give Luke a follow!

Sports week sew Luke bring plenty of optimism to the sewing room with an orange t-shirt. I loved the cut and reckon the Notches Jack T-shirt would be good for replicating this - complete with handmade Docker Beanie, of course. We met Luke on week wearing wearing red short dungarees and I thought, "I'm going to like you". The Merchant & Mills Harlene Dungarees look like a great match.

Luke wore a very appropriate vibrant shirt for holiday week and if it made you want to sew one, the Liberty Unisex Como Collar Shirt would be my pick. Their finale outfit felt like Luke's version of black tie, cool, laid-back with a hint of quirky details. I though the Wardrobe by Me Men's Heavy Shirt and Loose Linen Pants would recreate this ensemble.

Pascha was the baby of the bunch, but that didn't hold her back when it came to the sewing. She brought a killer combo of playful fun and timeless elegance to the challenges and proved to be pretty unstoppable in the pattern challenges. And I would say that Pascha's style reflects that fun approach to fashion with a classic edge. As a fan of historical costume, we are excited to see what Pascha makes next!

Pascha wore a gorgeous, waterfall ruffle front blouse for Design Icons week (episode 9) and I haven't found a match, but the V1824 Tops gives you a similar look. Pascha kicked off the series wearing a cool strappy cami that could easily be replicated with the Chalk and Notch Victory Tank.

Pasha's finale dress was just gorgeous. A spot of detective work showed me she used the McCall's M8108, but I think the Fibre Mood Mindy Dress is spot on for copying this look. During week 3 Pasha wore a pattern she made for the first made-to-measure and we are pretty sure it's the Vikisews Nola Dress.

We had a little taste of Kiell as he stepped into Sara's shoes to present the Christmas special, but i was great to get a full series-worth of his quips. Although we missed Sara's outfits, we have to say Kiell's made up for that void. He really brought it in the outfit stakes and we couldn't wait to see what he was wearing each week.

Kiell killed it with his vibrant jackets and we had loads of people asking for pattern suggestions. He wore an abstract floral jacket on fourth episode and if you want to recreate it, I'd try Know Me ME2036. You'd could move the pockets down and if you put snaps on the inside of the placket, you'd get the clean look of Kiell's jacket.

Kiell's Holiday week was my favourite. A proper beach shirt with cargo shorts and pink sunnies to complete the look. I reckon the Tropical Shirt and Cargo Shorts from Wardrobe by Me would be a good match. The lilac bomber Kiell wore on episode 2 also caught my eye. The Fibre Mood Sean Jacket is a good pattern dupe.

If it's a full deep dive into Esme's outfits you're after, check out the Brand Edit: Esme Young blog post, but here are a few outfits from this series that caught my eye...

I had a few messages on social media asking for a pattern idea for the bomber dress Esme wore on episode 9 and I found one! You could make the Maker's Atelier Sports Coat a little more A-line and use a denim or cord complete with contrasting sweatshirt cuff and tada - you have your Esme dress!

Esme cracked out a jacket she wore on the 2023 Christmas special and boy, were we pleased to see it. If you are lucky enough to hunt down some jazzy fabric, you could use the Assembly Line Cropped Jacket pattern.

Esme stays loyal to her staple - the shirt dress and I have a couple of pattern options that are very Esme. Try the Merchant and Mills Niven Dress or the Maker's Atelier Oversized Shirt Dress if you want one in your wardrobe.

We don't usually include Patrick's outfits as sewing fully tailored suits is another beast, but he treated us to some casual ensembles this series...

The long-sleeved version of the Wardrobe by Me Draper Polo Shirt is perfect for recreating Patrick's casual look and I have two trouser options for you that both feature the key detail, those pleats. Try Vikisews Oliver Trousers or the Wardrobe by Me Cocoon Pants.

And if you want more from Patrick Grant, check out our video interview with him which features another casual look!

Don’t forget to check out the pattern picks for every episode of the Great British Sewing Bee series 10 and if you’re binging previous series to fill the hole in your Sewing Bee life, we have pattern picks for the previous series (including the Christmas specials) too!
