Designers to Discover in 2023

As the sewing world expands, new indie designers pop up with innovative designs and concepts that we just love to hunt out and share. We’ve got a wealth of indie pattern designers just waiting to be discovered in the shop, but if you want a place to start we’ve got a handful we want to share a little more about…

We added all of these wonderful indie designers to the shop in 2022. You may recognise some of them, or you may be discovering a brand-new-to-you gem! They all have some wonderfully individual qualities in their patterns. From video-only tutorials for visual learners to designs for special occasions to patterns to keep your yarn hobbies tidy. We hope you’ll enjoy scrolling through some of their designs and that you discover something new today!

We were all very excited about adding this brand to the shop, and it’s been a big hit with Foldliners! The Modern Sewing Co was founded by London-based Hetty who pivoted when the pandemic hit from selling fully made clothes to selling patterns for people to sew their own clothes at home.

The designs are thoroughly modern with simple silhouettes and delightful details that are asking for you to put your own stamp on them with choice of fabrication and notions. The Worker Trousers sewing pattern was one of our top ten releases of 2022, so they’ve been snapped up by lots of makers already! Rachel from team Fold Line made a stunning pair and left a review if you want to see them in the wild!

Sizing: Size range varies by design: UK 4/6 – 26, UK 4/6 – 20 or UK 18 – 26, UK 4/6 – 20

We added this fresh new designer to the shop who has a fabulous catalogue of designs that mix and match with each other so well! Bara Studio was founded by German designer, Christina, who wants to share her love for fashion and connection to garments through sewing them yourself! Christina worked in fashion production and was frustrated by how little is understood about how clothes are made, so launched Bara Studio to help home sewers make their own.

The modern and stylish designs are things you will want to wear day in, and day out, and they have a timeless quality to them. Most of the Bara Studio patterns come with links to video tutorials (in German with English subtitles), which is a great addition for visual learners (like me!). The Thea Shacket and the Mila Dress and Shirt have been the most popular designs.

We are always getting requests for occasionwear patterns, so we were thrilled to add Sew Love Patterns to the Fold Line family.

Sew Love Patterns was founded by London-based Johanna, a pattern cutter who has worked with emerging designers and small brands, as well as on bespoke garments and bridal wear. Johanna loves jumpsuits and wedding dresses which shine through in her feminine and classic designs! The Springe Dress has been a big hit with Foldliners. It’s perfect wedding guest attire!

If dressing for the summer months finds you at your happiest, this is the brand for you! Paradise Patterns was founded by Sanna, a designer and pattern maker based in Hawaii who knows a thing or two about dressing for sunny weather! The modern, relaxed and flowy designs are perfect for sewing and wearing all summer long! The Hallon Dress has been a firm fave with Foldliners and we really love the latest pattern – the Protea Pants.

We know you like to discover fresh new designers as much as we do, so you’re in for a treat with this addition. Introducing Juliana Martejevs patterns, based in Germany, the team aim to revolutionise DIY fashion. The designs are modern, cool and perfect for everyday wear. My favourite is the Sally Sweater which includes a video tutorial for tie-dyeing your own sweater!

Juliana Martejevs PDF patterns come with video tutorials instead of traditional written instructions (in German with English subtitles), which is great for visual learners (like me!). You can preview the tutorial videos on the product pages.

We were already big fans of the New Craft House, for their expertly sourced deadstock fabric and fab sewing workshops, so we were really keen to add their pattern range to the shop. Hannah and Rosie are school friends who sell true designer deadstock fabrics and haberdashery as well as running sewing workshops from their London-based studio. They launched an ‘everyday’ collection of patterns for women and men that are perfect for daily wear. They are great patterns to have in your collection as you will make them again and again! My absolute favourite is the Everyday Waistcoat pattern. It’s perfect for experimenting with quilting.

If you love sewing for your other hobbies, this might be the perfect discovery for you! Lasenby Patterns specialise in patterns for homewares and bags, including bags specifically designed for knitting/crochet – great for all those sewists who also dabble in yarn crafts.

London-based Sam left the corporate city rat race in 2020 to focus on this wonderful sewing business and designing wares to organise home and crafts. From project bags to placemat settings, Lasenby patterns will have you organised in style and your home will enjoy an injection of me-made goodies! I love to knit on the go, so the Samphire Duffel Project Bag is going to have to be added to my 2023 sewing plans!
