A great alternative to jeans

A review of The Modern Sewing Co. Worker Trousers

One of my aims this year was to make trousers so that I don’t just wear jeans all the time. I have been looking at options for a few months but when the Worker Trousers by The Modern Sewing Co were released recently I instantly wanted to make them. They’ve also been really popular within the sewing community too. They have been designed to fit around the waist, ballooingin at the upper thighs and then tapering at the ankles.

I enjoyed the challenge of sewing a fly with bias binding (there is also the option to sewing it with a button fly too), and jeans-like features such as the back pockets and belt loops. I didn’t need to do much fitting at all, which was a pleasant surprise! I have been wearing them out and about – they are comfy and will be great now we are heading into Winter.

Fit

The fit was good on the toile I made (size 12) and I didn’t need to make any changes around the waist but I did straighten the side seams at the upper thighs because I didn’t want to make the trousers with the ballooning style, opting for a straighter leg. I am 5ft 6″ and when the hems were rolled up they finished at the top of my boots so if you were taller or wanted to wear them with a different style of shoe you might want to lengthen.

Instructions

I found the instructions to be clear and easy to follow. There are written instructions accompanied with hand drawn illustrations for each step. I liked the finishing details including the topstitching along the side seams. I did need to take my time and double check the fly constructions as this was more tricky to follow. I pinned these pieces to check first before sewing in place.

Supplies

The fabric is a hazel coloured Cotton Faille from the New Craft House with matching thread and I used a jeans zipper in black and gold. I would say this fabric has a medium weight, which meant it wasn’t too bulky to sew multiple layers but the trousers have a structure.
