Find That Pattern: Barbie

I don’t think we’ve EVER had so many requests for a find my pattern before! So I headed to the cinema and got emersed in the world of Barbie so that I could hunt out patterns for outfits in the film. I have to say that I personally loved the film, it was a feast for the eyes, the storyline was great and Ryan Gosling was epic. If you haven’t gone I highly recommend it, and it transported me back to my own Barbie dreamhouse days. If you wanted to know a bit more about how the set was made, this video tour on Architectural Digest was fantastic. As a fellow maker, I loved finding out about the scaling of the props, how things were made, and how true it was to the toy.

Right enough waffling from me… shall we talk patterns? Below is the video talking you through all the patterns I’ve hunted out alongside the images.

This cowgirl look was incredible and one she wore for a good chunk of the movie. This outfit would be a great costume for a fancy dress party or Halloween. The patterns that I thought would work well for these are the Fibre Mood Vivienve waistcoat for the top. The trousers of the McCalls 8369 are another good option and note the seat detail on these at the waist.

As the Barbie’s set to work trying to win back their world they all wore these fantastic pink jumpsuits. I’ve got two great options for you that both work well. If you like a slimmer leg then head for the Our Lady of Leisure Gimlet. For something with a wider leg then the McCall’s 8243. Both have the button up front and tie at the waist.

This was one of my favourite scenes at the White House.. ahem Pink House. These super fun suits with a bit of a Chanel feel to them as they were made out of a Boucle fabric.

I found some super patterns for these looks. First up the new release from Bella Loves Patterns with the Freddie Jacket, it’s such a classic shape. For the full look for the McCall’s 8370 this comes with both the skirt and the jacket included. For a more modern take, go for the Vikisews cropped Bryce jacket. For something with a little less structure choose the Heather Blazer from Friday Pattern Company.

As Barbie leaves Barbie World you can’t help but swoon over this dress she was wearing in the car. I spent so long looking for a perfect match but I think that Simplicity 1459 could be adapted. If you love hunting out a vintage pattern then the Simplicity 3581 has the double-breasted bodice and the collar could be adapted.

Ken…. ahhh Ken. There were some amazing outfits.. the fur coat with the horses on the lining was out of this world. This felt like a classic look for him and a lot of the other Ken’s and I thought the Simplicity 9758 was spot on. Also….loved that it was in Pink!

Slumber party! Girls night wouldn’t be complete without some fantastic pjs and I thought that the Nina Lee Picadilly set was similar to the bottom image. The Closet Core Carolyn would be perfect for the image above… just add Maribou at the sleeves and hem.

Let’s be honest Weird Barbie has some good looks and this pink big-sleeved number was my personal favourite. The Fibre Mood Judy dress is an almost perfect match. Add some tulle to the sleeve head to add more drama to the sleeves!

I had to include this dress as it’s on so many of the promotional images and to be honest it’s gorgeous. The Burda 6343 felt the closet with the big pleats in the skirt, but the Simplicity 9738 would also work well.

Last but not least the Barbie party…. that jumpsuit was SO good. I did a lot of hunting for a strapless jumpsuit and to be honest I struggled a little bit. These are the best of the bunch but if you have a suggestion do let me know. The McCall’s 8101 features a wide leg and the 8360 is a narrower cut.

We really hope you enjoyed this and we’ll be back soon.

  1. Where is the pattern for the yellow dress Barbie wore at the end? Watching the video review I was sure it would be in it
