'Tis the season for a bit of partywear! Whether you have some nights on the town planned or some low key nights at home we've got some fantastic party patterns for you. I went out and scoured the high street and have reported back on what's happening on the hight street so that you can sew something you feel great in.
I go through all the patterns in my video but if you wanted a closer look at any of them then have a look below.
Let's start with fabrics! Metallics featured heavily this year, particularly silver which featured on everything from jeans (above) to blouses, skirts and dresses. I also saw a lot of simple pieces like a jersey t-shirt made in a metallic jersey that was a simple way to add a bit of sparkle.
Spotty prints are such a playful way to add a bit of a print without going too far. I saw a lot of prints similar to the Boden dress, with a velvet spot on a sheer fabric. Talking of velvet...
This comes out every party season and I love a bit of velvet! This year there are a lot of simple items like the whistles shirt made in velvet. Again an easy way to incorporate it your wardrobe.
Finally a bit of texture play. I spoke about this in my autumn trends post but noticed that they have taken it a step further and are mixing textures within items like the Whistles dress with the velvet top and silk bottom. This is something we could easily do to a pattern.
Right let's talk about the shapes I saw.
This lovely V-neck dress is such a wardrobe staple, I'd be surprised if you didn't own something like this already.
Two great options for you the Atelier Jupe Alana if you like something a little looser and the elasticated waistband is perfect if you are throwing some shapes on the dancefloor. The Sew Love Springe is another fab option and you can pick between a straight or flaired skirt.
I loved this empire cut dress with big sleeves and saw lots of these in different iterations.
I was really pleased with this pattern pick as it's bang on! The Papercut Lulee dress is such a lovely pattern and a fairly simple sew too.
Next up a bit of tailoring and if you are someone who is always cold (me!) then this is the look to go for and you'll be toasty all night. The trouser shape varied on these quite a lot so I've included two options.
For he blazer I chose the Heather from Friday Pattern Co as well as the Jasika Blazer from Closet Core. The Heather is much more simple to sew, less details and tailoring technique you can see it's also cut a little longer. The Jasika is perfect if you wanted to get your teeth stuck into a meaty project.
For the trousers, hilariously both named Billie/Billy! Choose between a wide cut leg with the Bella Loves Billy or for a tapered ancle cut option the Fibre Mood Billie.
The simple shift is back, perfect for a speedy sew! All cut quite short and with long and short sleeve options.
Two fab options here the Tilly and the Buttons Stevie, a super simple make and would be a great project for a beginner. I also included the Tessuti Bella as this felt like a good middle ground as it's got a little more flair.
Finally we've got the cosy partywear department! Lots of jersey or knit two pieces many in similar colours or with a bit of sparkle like the Me + Em outfit.
Some really great patterns for this. The Style Arc Yoyo skirt and top (separate patterns) is a match made in heaven and you can choose between a cropped or longer top length. If you are looking for a skirt that a little less fitted then the Tessuti Mahlia is a lovey a line skirt that would look fab with the cropped Yoyo.
I hope you enjoyed that and found something fun to make for the festive season!
