SEW THE TRENDS: SUMMER

SEW THE TRENDS: SUMMER
Kate Underdown

Sew the trend for summer is here and ready for you to dip your toes into. Grab yourself an iced drink, pop your sunnies on and let’s dive in. I’ve hit the high street and hunted out the core trends for you guys to sew this summer. I’ve covered co-ords, swimsuits, jackets and much more. All the patterns are listed below, if you fancy finding out more they are all there ready for you. Enjoy..

Co-ords:

Co-ords sets were everywhere, from more formal stuff to wear on a night out to something you’d wear on the beach. We thought that the Saguaro set from Friday Pattern Company was a fantastic option. It’s a great pattern for a beginner and you can have it whipped up in no time.

Skirts:

The midi-length skirt with a slit at the side, was another popular shape. This is a great wardrobe staple that you can roll out each summer. The Chalk and Notch Evelyn skirt was our choice for this. It comes with two variations, one with an elastic waist and the version you can see above.

Tops:

So you’ve got your skirt sorted but what do you wear with it?  These boxy sleeveless t-shirts are great basics and their relaxed fit makes them perfect for warmer days. The Eight Tee from Madeit patterns is a fantastic option if you wanted to recreate this look.

Swimwear:

There was SO much swimwear in the shops, I was actually really shocked at the vast array of options. because of that, I have three for you! The first up was the frilled swimsuit, mainly made in darker colours, as I think it makes it looks more grown-up. The brand new Tilly and the Buttons Corralie swimsuit is a perfect match – hurrah!

Next up we had lots of simple bikini sets, these classic shapes are unlikely to go out of style, a perfect option to invest some time getting the fit perfect. The pattern we chose was Cottesloe Bikini from Megan Neilsen, this also comes with a swimsuit variation.

Last but not least we saw a lot of paneled swimsuits, mainly low cut with a deep v at the front, and ripe for a bit of colour blocking. We thought that the beautiful Phoenix bodysuit and swimsuit from Madalynne fits the brief perfectly.

Jackets:

A roomy blazer was in pretty much every high street shop. In muted tones and often as part of a set with shorts or trousers. If you wanted to recreate this look the Noelle jacket from Fibremood would be a fantastic option.

Another key look was the workwear jacket or boxy shacket. Perfect for layering on cooler days and actually a lovely simple sew too. We love the Birgitta Helmersson workwear jacket. It’s a unisex pattern so can be made for all members of your family!

Dresses:

Dresses all come with tiny straps this summer, whether you choose to make it short or long is up to you! We found two fantastic patterns, if you love a cowl neck then the Jessica dress from Tammy Handmade is the pattern for you. If you are looking for something a little longer and looser then the Summer dress from Fibre Mood is the answer!

Trousers:

Highwaisted and wide-legged are the shape to be wearing this summer. There are so many fantastic options for patterns I found it hard to narrow it down! We thought that the Rose Trousers by Made by Rae are a great option. A simple shape and pleats at the front these, are a wardrobe staple.
