DESIGNERS TO DISCOVER: SEWING THERAPY

We are thrilled to introduce Sewing Therapy to the Fold Line gang! We've been eager to offer these amazing patterns in the shop, so let's explore more about the brand in this blog post!

Sewing Therapy was founded by the popular maker and YouTuber, Sara K. The versatile and beginner-friendly sewing patterns have been created with simplicity and creativity in mind. There are so many ways you can style each pattern, and they have been designed to complement each other, allowing you to create mini capsule wardrobes.

It's not just the styling opportunities that make these sewing patterns so special; they all come with sewalong videos, which is great for visual learners. Bring Sara into your sewing room and follow along as you make each garment up. The written instructions aren't illustrated at each step, so these patterns really speak to anyone who prefers to watch video tutorials.

You'll also find videos on each product page showing the patterns in motion, which can be really helpful, and Sara demonstrates ways to tie/style the garments. It's very inspiring!

We wanted to discover more from Sara about the patterns and the inspiration behind the brand, so here's a "getting to know" Sewing Therapy interview...

How did you get into sewing, and what do you love most about it?

My journey into sewing began just before I immigrated from Korea to Canada. Knowing that labour costs are quite high here and that my husband constantly needs his pants hemmed, I decided to take a one-day class as practical preparation for our new life. What started as a functional skill quickly blossomed into a deep passion that became my sanctuary during the early, often lonely days of settling into a new country.

What I love most about sewing is the profound sense of fulfilment it brings. Beyond just being a hobby, it provided me with a sense of achievement and genuine happiness when I needed it most. It has transformed from a practical necessity into a creative outlet that allows me to express myself while finding peace in the process.

We’d love to know why you started your brand, and what has been the most surprising thing about selling your own sewing patterns?

I decided to start my brand because I realised there was a community of makers who shared my aesthetic and wanted to create similar garments. I truly believed in my style, and the desire to share those designs so we could "sew together" was my biggest motivation. The name "Sewing Therapy" actually originated from my YouTube channel, and it felt only natural to carry that identity over when I transitioned into pattern making.

The most surprising thing about selling patterns has been the overwhelming realisation of just how many people resonate with my vision. It’s incredibly humbling to see makers from different corners of the world putting their own spin on my designs, confirming that the "therapy" I found in sewing is something that translates across borders.

Describe your brand in three words...

Thoughtful, Romantic, Timeless.

Could you tell us about your personal style? What are the things you enjoy wearing the most, and do you have any go-to outfits?

I would describe my personal style as simple yet infused with a distinct personality. I am naturally drawn to romantic and feminine silhouettes, but I prefer them in oversized, comfortable cuts. This balance allows me to feel elegant without sacrificing ease of movement.

My go-to outfits usually involve garments that play with volume—think voluminous dresses or breezy tops paired with A-line skirts that feel effortless. I love pieces that make a subtle statement through their shape and the way the fabric moves, rather than through loud prints or complex details.

Which is your favourite pattern from your collection and why?

It is so difficult to choose just one! However, the Hanbok Skirt holds a very special place in my heart. It is one of my most-loved patterns, and its success gave me the confidence and the foundation to continue my journey as a pattern designer.

I also have to mention the Tie Dress. It was designed to be both beginner-friendly and "body-friendly," ensuring that makers of all skill levels and shapes can create something beautiful that fits comfortably. Seeing how much joy it brings to the sewing community makes it a true favourite.

What's your most favourite, and least favourite part of the sewing process?

My favourite part of the process is actually cutting the fabric. There is so much anticipation that leads up to that moment—choosing the perfect textile, pre-washing it, and meticulously preparing the pattern. Once the shears finally meet the fabric, it feels like the real magic starts, and the construction phase seems to fly by after that.

As for my least favourite part? It has to be the cleanup! After the creative whirlwind is over and I have a beautiful new garment, facing the stray threads and scrap fabric scattered across the room is always the part I procrastinate on the most.

We'd love to know what you are currently sewing!

Right now, I am hard at work on the Tie No. 2! It’s a project I’m very excited about. In fact, by the time you’re reading this, the pattern might already be released and available for you to sew!

Could you share any plans you have for upcoming patterns?

I have a very busy season ahead! Following the release of Tie No. 2, I’m planning a diverse lineup that includes two more new dress patterns, two skirts, a bag, a vest, a shirt and two pieces of outerwear. I am also working on my very first pants pattern. I’m feeling a mix of nervous excitement about the pants, as it’s a new category for me, but I can’t wait to share them with everyone.

Wow… I so resonate with everything from this designer only my outlet was grief.. Grief never leaves and we learn to live with it and neither does sewing. The two are so untwined. I’ve progressed so much but now and then I want a quick simple sew and this designer ticks all those boxes.
For me, YouTube instructions makes it more fun and company while I sew.
Also no waste is another massive bonus.
Thank you so much.
