Find that Pattern: The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

This has to be one of the most requested videos that we have ever had! So firstly an apology that it’s taken us so long to do it. This week we are searching out the perfect patterns from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Now in it’s fourth and final season this fantastic show is based on a New Yorker from a Jewish family becoming a stand up comedian. You follow the trials and tribulations of her success and failure along the way and the outfits… well the outfits are out of this world. For those vintage sewing fans, we hope that you’ll enjoy this. All the patterns mentioned in the video, are down below for closer inspection!

Patterns Featured in the Video:

First up we have this gorgeous two piece. The dress coat is perfect for slinging over a big dress and the perfect pattern to recreate this would be the Simplicity 8509. It’s got a very similar collar and raglan sleeves. If the dress underneath has got you hot under the collar fear not, the Simplicity 8980 has a wiggle dress is vintage perfection. The bow detail could be tweaked and adapted to make it closer to the one she was wearing.

We loved the detail on this blue dress with the keyhole opening on the chest. We thought that the Simplicity 9296 would be a fantastic starting point to try to recreate this look.

This collar detail was featured on a lot of outfits worn by Midge and one we loved. We came across the Butterick 6870 which has two skirt options making it a really versatile option.

This amazing red dress got a lot of love when the episode was first aired. We got another beautiful Gertie pattern (S9294). The only tweak you’d need to make would be to add a belt and make the V at the bust a little deeper. Apart from that you are good to go!

Little black dresses don’t come a lot better than this! The Simplicity 8873 would be a really good starting point. The only thing that might need tweaking is the gathered skirt so that it is less full. This would be a simple alteration, so now all we need to do is find the fabric!

This style of dress was featured quite a lot in the earlier series. The key detail was the seam line under the bust and a paneled skirt and we thought the Simplcity 8732 would be great for this. It’s easily tweakable if you wanted to add any additional features too.

The infamous court outfit was one of my personal favourites, and I can’t believe how similar the fabrics are!! The Simplicity 8731 is a dress and coat pattern, both have beautiful vintage details on them. The question is which are you going to make first?

This was another shape that featured a lot throughout the series, a cropped jacket and a simple tight-fitting dress. This is such a fantastic pattern and once you’ve got the fit perfected you can whip them up in all the colours! It also comes with a little lace top option.

This coat is vintage perfection, we loved this big tie detail at the front. The Vogue 8875 would be a perfect option if you wanted to try to recreate it. It’s another pattern that comes with a great dress option too – hurrah!

Last but not least we have a fantastic top to make all your vintage halterneck dreams come true. The Simplicity 8645 with four fantastic options gives your lots of scope to play with.

  1. I know this isn’t available through your website, but there’s a pattern for that exact red dress created by the actual costume shop who made it for the show. The Costume Coalition has released a couple patterns to help raise money to support the costume industry in the wake of the pandemic. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1062680609/the-marvelous-mrs-maisel-dress-pdf
