Top Trouser Patterns

Trouser sewing patterns can be a bit daunting for sewists – there’s the notoriously tricky fit aspect and those intimidating fly-front zippers just for starters. But in actual fact, trousers needn’t be scary at all – especially with the wide range of sewing patterns available catering to all styles and levels. Get inspired below with our list of some of the best: wide-legged, slimline, casual, smart and jeans.

Tailored

Ultimate Trousers – Sew Over It

These trousers from Sew Over It are simplicity itself, perfect for an advanced beginner who’s looking to tackle fitted trousers. Their slimline leg and ankle-grazing length have a hint of Audrey Hepburn about them, but given you can make them up in almost any medium-weight fabric they’re the perfect palette for expressing your own style – play it cool in sophisticated neutrals or splash out with an eye-catching print. With only an invisible zipper closure and a facing finishing the waistband (which sits on the natural waist) the only thing that could prove challenging with these trousers is fit, making them the perfect pattern to start finessing your skills in this area. Sew Over It also have an online course, ‘The Ultimate Guide to Sewing and Fitting Trousers’, which could give you a helping hand in that direction.

Available in sizes UK 8-20, paper and PDF formats.

Portobello Trousers – Nina Lee

A supremely simple pair of trousers, the Portobellos are sufficiently capacious that the only real area of fitting to worry about is the waistband, which closes at the back with an invisible zip and a button. If you’ve made a skirt, you can almost certainly make these! They work equally well in lightweight winter wools and floaty summer linens and rayons and the full-length means they’ll work all year round, dressed up or dressed down. It’s all in the detail

Diego Trousers – Republique du Chiffon

These are a halfway house between relaxed and tailored, making them a stylish weekend chino. Denim

Ginger Jeans and Morgan Jeans – Closet Case Files

The Ginger Jeans are a stalwart for the sewing community, introducing many people to sewing jeans for the first time. Heather Lou is on a mission to help people sew their own jeans and as such the Gingers have been carefully designed to flatter a wide range of figures. The basic pattern comes with two variations (mid-rise, stovepipe leg / high-waisted, skinny leg) but you can also purchase expansion packs to go low-rise or adapt the jeans for a flare. The Morgan Jeans were designed to cater to the growing trend for ‘boyfriend’ jeans, and manage to be both slouchy and slim enough to flatter at the same time. Unlike the Gingers, which are stretch jeans, Morgan is designed for non-stretch denim which will soften and wear over time, adding to that sexy relaxed fit.

Both patterns are supported by numerous online resources (a sew-along, ‘jeans-making 101’ blog posts, and the ‘Sew Your Own Jeans’ online course). Check out Heather’s hashtag #nofearnewjeans on Instagram for some recent inspiration! Available in sizes 0-20, paper and PDF formats.

With a high-rise waistline and a pocket stay for secret shaping, five pockets, rivets and belt-loops, these are a classic go-to style. Available in sizes 12-28, paper and PDF formats.

Comfort is Key!

Alexandria Peg Trousers– Named Clothing

The Alexandria Peg Trousers are a versatile design that can be dressed down for lazy days of lounging or dressed up for a (comfy) evening look – pair with a soft cosy fabric (they’re designed for wovens but you could make them in a knit) and a sweatshirt for the sofa, or a crepe or something silky with a cami and heels and you’re ready to hit the town! Or, make them in a brightly patterned viscose and wear with sandals on the beach. The elasticated waist and relaxed fit means these are another pattern that’s a cinch to fit. Available in sizes EUR 32 – 50 (US 0-18, UK 4-22), paper and PDF formats.

Hudson Pants – True Bias

This list wouldn’t be complete without a pair of comfy knit trousers! Another smash hit from True Bias, the Hudson pants are the sort of lounge trousers that you still won’t feel embarrassed opening the door in, or popping out to the shops. They’re loose enough to be supremely comfortable, but close fitting enough to be both stylish and possible workout-wear. They come in two lengths – and, wait for it, in kids’ and mens’ versions too! Available in sizes 0-18, paper and PDF formats.

Mercury Collection – Marilla Walker

Knit fabrics are in no way essential for a pair of super comfy trousers – these woven trousers from the Mercury capsule collection by Marilla Walker are gloriously roomy and have the look of being unexpectedly effortlessly stylish. They’re inspired by the relaxed forms of Scandinavian and Japanese fashion, people who certainly seem to know how to dress for style and comfort. The trousers avoid slipping into pyjama-zone with shaping at the front of the trouser and a flat-front waistband (with an elasticated back waist), but let’s face it, these are gorgeous secret pyjamas if ever there were some! Available in sizes 1-8, paper and PDF formats.
