SEW THE TRENDS SPRING: PART 1
Kate Underdown

Spring is finally here, and the high street is bursting with fresh inspiration.

Whether you're scrolling through the latest collections or wandering through your favourite shops, there's no shortage of exciting trends to discover this season. We've done the legwork for you, hunting down the most wearable spring looks and matching them with sewing patterns. So shall we get started?

There is a video with a deeper dive into all of the looks as well as a written round-up below. I've split this into a two parter so make sure you come back next week for part two.

Print:

Let's start with print shall we.. first up we have spots. Think monocrome for colour but you can play with scale. Everything from the piny Polka on the ASOS jacket to the larger spot on the Hobbs dress.

The humble stripe is also back, similar to the spot the scale can be played with everything from the big bold Arket top to a subtle pinstripe.

Gingham is another fab print for spring, think monochrome and small scale.

Fabrics:

Some great fabrics this season, lace in particular had a lot of airtime.

Suede also featured a lot, particularly, as you would expect, in the outerwear department. The blue Whistles trench was so so beautiful!

Finally we have satin, it adds such a depth of texture to an outfit and was all over the hight street.

Colour:

Next up we have colour and I'm delighted to report that we have some really great bright options for this season. Hurrah! The only colour I forgot to get in here was denim which always features a lot.

Outerwear:

So lets move onto outerwear... the barn is back! More oversized and in a while host of fabrics so you can really get creative.

We have two fantastic options  the Atelier Brunette La Barn Jacket  and the Closet Core Fowler. Either would be great so pick your favourite.

This boxy lightweight nylon jacket was EVERYWHERE. Perfect for when it gets a bit warmer and would be a fun sew.

The French Navy Laken is really close. If you like the version with a drawstring waist this would be an easy tweak to add.

The car coat is perfect for spring. Choose between a looser fitting boyfriend style and a slightly more fitted version depending on your preference.

Three great options here. For the loose fitting options the Darcy coat from Modern Sewing Co. and Le Manteau from Atelier Brunette. If you like a slightly more fitted cut then the Assembly Line Car coat would be ace.

The cropped trench was another fantastic offering this spring. Again there were lots of takes on this style so pick the one you like the best.

A couple of great options here is the Cortland Trench for a classic double breasted number. The Sew Over It Suraya if you wanted something lightweight as it isn't lined.

Finally for the jackets this season, we have the zip up... football managers jacket. I need a better name for this, but you get the idea.

I was delighted with my choice here. The Fibre Mood Astrid is such a fantastic option.. perhaps a little more boxy than the pictures but you could always size down.

Right that is it for the first instalment, I hope you found something you love, or at least got you thinking about spring sewing. Make sure you pop back for week two.

Hi! Great roundup! I just noticed that the model in the Zip Up examples is the same in the topshop and arket one. Isn’t that a funny coincidence? Or do you think she is AI?

Hello,
I watched the first part of your Spring Trends video.( Jackets)
I was so impressed you had gone out to the High Street and gone to have a look for trends in colour and pattern. I really liked all the patterns you selected to match with the high street garments.
Congratulations; I can’t wait for your next instalment.
Best wishes
Amanda.

My next two makes are the Hanbok skirt by Sewing Therapy and the Falconer Pants by Hellen’s Closet.
