TOP 10 BLAZER SEWING PATTERNS

Cosy season is coming, and so are the long evenings indoors (thank goodness!). If you fancy slowing down your sewing, taking on a project that will build your skills, I can't think of a better option than a blazer.

Blazer making is a more advanced project, where you will learn welt pocket magic, the importance of proper pressing, and, in some cases, the impact a good shoulder pad can have (no, not the 80s kind!).

But, there are some dialled back patterns that are far more approachable (which I have included, of course!), so if you have a few projects under your belt, there is no reason not to give blazer making a go! We've rounded up 10 of our favourite blazer sewing patterns for you to contemplate.

The Modern Sewing Co Naomi Blazer

If you're looking for a more advanced project to sink your teeth into this autumn, the Naomi Blazer is a fantastic option. It took 18 months from design conception to the final pattern, so you know each and every detail has been perfected. We have seen the hourglass blazer coming through for the season, so it's also in vogue.

Tailoring is a tricky skill to master, but the designer has kept the core elements of blazer making while letting go of some of the more complex processes to create a piece that looks beautiful and is accessible to sew. You will be endlessly proud of your creation.

Friday Pattern Company Heather Blazer

If you're intimidated by the idea of sewing a blazer, this one is designed to be approachable for the beginner sewist. Heather's oversized fit takes your blazer out of the boardroom and into a daily essential. It's so easy to style over a simple t-shirt and jeans, or as a light jacket over a dress for date nights.

Heather doesn't scrimp on the details. The blazer is fully lined and features a two-piece sleeve, single button closure, front patch pockets and lapel collar.

Atelier Scämmit Punto Blazer

Puntos' well-balanced design – neither too feminine nor too masculine - is a great option for anybody who lusts after French brand, Sézane. The double-breasted closure adds style and warmth, while the chic lapel collar, bust darts, and curved tailored sleeves give you all the tailoring details for need. It's a pattern worthy of your time.

Friday Pattern Company Eddy Cardigan Blazer

Merging the comfort a cardigan with the structure of a blazer, this powerhouse pattern is just waiting to elevate your handmade wardrobe. Eddy is a fully lined collarless blazer, featuring body darts for subtle shaping, front patch pockets, a single front button, and back vent.

The sewing process is approachable yet skill building, and its simple yet impactful silhouette offers endless styling opportunities. You can see how much the choice of fabric impacts the overall feel of the garment, so you are bound to make more than one.

The Maker's Atelier Blazer

Inspired by a classic men's blazer, this design fits right in with 'Gentlewoman' style. You can make your blazer lined or unlined as you please. It has plenty of functional pockets, as well as a faux placket with button detail on the sleeve. Accessories it with a belt, and you will nail this season's look.

Bella Loves Patterns Fran Blazer

If you want to take this tailoring project seriously, you cannot go wrong with the Fran Blazer. The designer is a tailoring pro, so all the details you could hope for are present in the pattern. The fully lined, masculine-style blazer has a straight, oversized silhouette, with a two-button closure, wide shoulders and shoulder pads. You'll find yourself sewing a notched collar, a single chest standing pocket welt, as well as a working pocket welt completed with a pocket flap.

Fran also includes a traditional two-piece sleeve and vent at the back. You will learn so much in the process!

Maison Fauve Mimosa Blazer

Effortlessly elegant, the Mimosa Blazer is well worth highlighting. It has a straight cut, two-piece sleeves, side panels, a false welt chest pocket, and large rounded patch pockets. A shawl-like collar softens the menswear-inspired silhouette for a modern look. It's a standout piece that will leave you with new skills and a snazzy blazer.

I AM Patterns Rose Blazer

If you're keen to add a blazer to your handmade wardrobe, but would like the pattern to offer you other options, Roses' versatility is likely to appeal. You can make it sleeveless, as a blazer or even a coat. The oversized, double-breasted design has an androgynous feel, lapel collar and straight welt pockets. The sleeveless coat-length version is such a chic layering piece.

Fibre Mood Kai Blazer

I wanted to include an option that gives you a belted silhouette, for anyone who has ruled a blazer out thanks to its classically boxy fit. Kai is fairly loose cut, but it can be tightened with a belt to accentuate the waist - giving you styling options. It's fully lined and looks great teamed with the Peaches Trousers in the same colour, creating a modern suit.

Coralie Bijasson Naïma Jacket

If you like the idea of a blazer, but want something that's more fitted to special occasions, this is a fantastic option. Naïma features a distinctive stand-up shawl collar, and flap pockets with piping add a sophisticated and functional touch. Choose fabrics such as wool, denim or velvet for a perfect everyday version, or opt for the refinement of jacquard for an elegant look.

Step one of 'let's sew a blazer' is complete. You have some excellent options to choose from, then you can search for your fabric and notions, before easing into the ultimate slow sewing project. Don't forget to fuel your sessions with plenty of tea and snacks!
