SEWING PATTERNS FOR LINEN FABRIC

SEWING PATTERNS FOR LINEN FABRIC
Kate Underdown

Are you a linen lover? Do you have a beautiful piece of linen fabric in your stash just waiting for the right sewing pattern to come along?

Well, team Fold Line chatted about which indie designers spring to mind when we think of linen, who really showcase this lovely substrate in their patterns, and came up with our top ten you should know about if you adore linen. Happy browsing!

Pattern Fantastique is one of the first designers that springs to mind when I think of linen. The designs are often quite sculptural and use linen to accentuate the (often voluminous) shapes. They are packed with breezy vintage vibes that are delivered in a modern way. The Vali Dress has become iconic in the sewing world thanks to its dreamy sleeves! They are well-worth a browse.

Paper Theory designs incredibly thoughtful patterns for daily life. The construction and seam lines are often very cunning, and the silhouettes look lovely in relaxed fabrics like linen. If you’ve got a precious piece of linen waiting to be sewn up you are sure to find something in their collection! The Zadie Jumpsuit has cult status in the sewing community and is loved by pretty much everyone who makes one!

Common Stitch is based in Australia, so know a thing or two about dressing for the heat! They favour natural fibres for their pattern samples, so expect to see a lot of inspiration for sewing with linen. We love the simple silhouettes that have subtle, yet special details peppered throughout the designs.

New Zealand-based Papercut Patterns celebrates eco-friendly fashion so turn to linen fabric quite a lot in their samples. The designs are pieces of art. Cleverly constructed with delightful details and can often be worn in multiple ways. They are a big hit with the sewing community.

The creative designs are always shown styled in lots of different ways. The Hinterland Dress is a great place to start as it has been popular with sewists for years – so has the seal of approval from those who’ve made it. Linen lovers must take a peek at their patterns!

You can’t discuss linen fabric without mentioning Merchant & Mills. Not only do they sell the most exquisite selection of linen fabrics, but they also design patterns that look SO good in them. You’ll find patterns that play to the strengths of linen – showcasing the body of the fabric, the natural ‘tumbled’ quality it has and how it presses into pleats beautifully. Your love of linen will only grow if you sew Merchant & Mills patterns!

Anna Allen uses lots of natural fibres in her sewing pattern samples and is particularly fond of linen. The images are shot in beautiful, rugged settings that echo the textures and tones of the clothing. If you haven’t heard of the Anthea Blouse and Dress yet, you’re in for a treat as it features the best sleeves in the sewing world! You might find that Anna Allen’s designs become firm favourites!

Sew House Seven has an incredible collection of relaxed designs that work beautifully in linen fabrics. The designs celebrate the natural texture of linen and the style lines look great in solid colours. One of my favourite Sew House Seven designs is an absolute classic and one of the first overall designs to be released – the Burnside Bibs! There has also been so much love for the Wildwood Wrap dress. You basically can’t go wrong with any of their designs and a cut of linen cloth!

Tessuti Fabrics started off as a fabric shop that was known for its beautiful selection of fabrics (particularly across natural substrates like linen and wool). As they grew, Tessuti started offering patterns to go along with the beautiful fabrics they sold which explains why they are so fantastic for linen! We have a huge catalogue of their designs so you are sure to find something to transform your precious cloth into a handmade gem!

The Modern Sewing Co is one of the latest indie designers to hit the shop, and one to check out if you are a linen fabric lover! The designs are thoroughly modern with simple silhouettes and delightful details that are asking for you to put your own stamp on them with choice of fabrication and notions. You’ll find lots of examples of how the patterns will look in linen as the founder, Hettie,  believes you can’t beat a solid, sturdy garment made from exquisite woven fabric.
