It's the sixth episode of series 10!

In the sixth episode of The Great British Sewing Bee series 10 and it's children's week. Seven contestants are challenged with making a sequined bomber jacket, upcycling beach towels into animal-themed fancy dress and the made-to-measure project was to use a childhood photo as inspiration to create a brand new outfit to fit a  child model. For episode six we have put our detective hats on to discover the sewing patterns from independent designers and commercial pattern houses used in Sewing Bee TV show. The patterns below are all matches or inspired by the designs used in the sixth episode of the Great British Sewing bee series 10. If you haven’t already seen our ultimate guide to the Sewing Bee  do take a look.

The theme this week was inspired by children. All seven contestants had to make three garments. The challenges included making a sequined bomber jacket, upcycling beach towels into animal-themed fancy dress and the made-to-measure project was to use a childhood photo as inspiration to create a brand new outfit to fit a  child model. Take a look at our sewing pattern suggestions below, we've tried to find the exact patterns used but where we haven't been able to  we have plenty of suggestions so that you can recreate these looks at home for your handmade wardrobe.

Sewing Bee: Pattern Picks

Pattern Challenge 1: Children's sequined bomber jacket

The first challenge of the sixth episode was to make a sequined bomber jacket for a child. The garment was created by first stitching the pocket bags to the bodice at the side seams before the lower band is sewn to the hem. The neck banding is lined up with the notches and front zipper. The sleeves are cuffed before being inserted before the zipper is fitted. The lining is assembled and sewn to the shell where it's joined at the cuff. The jacket is turned inside out through the hem before being hand stitched closed.

WISJ Designs - Child Cato Coat and Bomber Jacket

Cato is a versatile pattern for a coat or jacket with raglan sleeves and pockets tucked away in the front. Make the long version for a classier coat or make a cool bomber jacket with cuffs. Choose a simple lining or go for a neater finish with a facing and lining. Choose a hood (with or without a drawstring) to go with your bomber jacket or if you want to make a raincoat. Or choose a simple neckband. You can make Cato as complicated or as simple as you like: sew a full option coat or sew a simple jacket!

Sizing: 1 – 14 years. Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements. Available in the online shop: Yes, PDF or PDF + printed copy shop.

Transformation Challenge 2: Upcycling beach towels to make an animal-themed fancy dress outfit

In the upcycling challenge contestants had to upcycle beach towels into a completely new animal-themed fancy dress garment. Specific patterns weren't used for these tasks as contestants had to create a garment from existing materials in a fixed time so it's a bit tricky for us to make sewing pattern suggestions based on these design ideas.

Made-To-Measure Challenge 3: Using a childhood photo as inspiration to create a brand new outfit

In the last challenge of the fifth episode, all the contestants had to sew made-to-measure evening wear inspired by elements of a sari. A sari is a traditional garment made of one piece of cloth. There are over 100 ways to drape a sari around the body. The contestants though were asked to take the design element of a sari, using one piece of cloth and draping, to create a modern dress. Here are our pattern picks for the contestants and where sewing patterns have been self drafted or hacked we have suggested an alternative.
