Summer Smock Dress Sewing Patterns

For those of you that love a loose fitting summer dress then you are in for a treat. The summer smock dress or buffet dress, if you watched the sewing bee, has been really popular over the last couple of years on the high street. Luckily our wonderful indie pattern designers have answered our prayers and created some amazing designs for us to sew.  So whatever your style we think there is a fantastic sewing pattern for you guys to sew. Are you ready to get started?

Gather Dress sewing pattern from Birgitta Helmersson

We absolutely love this  Gather dress from Birgitta Helmersson. The pattern features  a dropped shoulder, gathered skirt and the waist seam is designed to sit over the bust. The interesting thing about this dress is that it is a zero waste sewing pattern.  So the idea is that you don’t waste any fabric when cutting out. Who doesn’t love this idea!

The March Dress and Top from Helen’s Closet:

The March dress from Helen’s Closet is already a firm favourite within the sewing community and we can see why. With a nod to the 70s this dress has a bib panel at the front of the dress with ties, a gathered skirt and dropped sleeve. We love a big sleeve but if you wanted something a little less voluminous there are options.  There is also a fantastic top variation for this pattern too.

The Lyra Shirtdress from Tilly and the Buttons:

We absolutely love the Lyra dress from Tilly and the Buttons. At first appearances this dress looks more like a shirt dress than a smock, but the loose fit on this and the gathering at the waist makes it lovely and floaty to wear. You can choose between a two tiered skirt and a sine tier, as well as a shorter sleeve if you wanted something more summery. Although with this British weather the long sleeve might be better!

The Verano dress from Christine Haynes:

The Verano dress from Christina Haynes is the ultimate beach dress pattern. This simple dress has nice wide straps, to cover your bra and loads of great options for the skirt. Our particular favourite is the tiered version above.  There are a whopping six variations to make the dress version of this pattern and it also comes with a top option that has two variations. So it’s a really fantastic versatile pattern that you can make in so many different ways.

Not only is it lovely and loose, it’s has no fastenings and raglan sleeves for easy insertion. So in terms of the construction it is relatively simple. You’ll also become a pro at gathering by the time you’ve finished it!
