Buy the Worker Trousers sewing pattern from The Modern Sewing Co. These are the ultimate everyday trousers and the perfect alternative to jeans all year round. The Worker Trousers fit snugly around the lower waist, with a slight balloon in the leg for volume and comfort, before tapering in at the ankle.

The construction features a concealed button or zip fly finished with binding, front pockets with facings, patch pockets, and a waistband with belt loops. The combination of fit and construction is tried and tested and designed to be worn into the ground, just like the very best vintage jeans.

A men's version is available here.

My favourite go to trousers!

I've worn these trousers for about a month now and they've slotted seamlessly into my current wardrobe!

Likes/Dislikes

I love the cropped and tapered leg of the trousers, it also allows for the leg to be roomy and comfortable whilst maintaining a nice shape. The pockets have ample room which we all love! I also love where the waist hits on me (I'm 164cm tall) and it gave me the perfect shape. The only thing I changed in my version was taking in the waist more.

Fitting Changes

I cut out the pattern per my measurements but still found that the waist was a bit roomy, a problem I tend to have with other trousers. I ended up taking this extra fabric out of the back seam. Next time I make these, I will put two darts in where the back pockets are just to make it a little more professional but my quick fix worked a treat nonetheless.

Instructions

The instructions were really straight forward and easy to follow. Although a lot of beginner sewers can be intimidated by trousers, I'd defintiely recommend these as the construction is simple and they use fairly basic sewing techniques throughout.

Fabric

I used a very lightweight cotton in a Sand colour from Pinny & Smock (@pinnyandsmockfabrics | www.pinnyandsmock.co.uk) which worked really well and has given the trousers a really relaxed look, perfect for the summer. I also got to use up some lovely scraps for the pocket lining! For my next pair, I'd really like to try them in a heavier fabric, like a cotton twill to give them more structure.

A great alternative to jeans

One of my aims this year was to make trousers so that I don't just wear jeans all the time. I have been looking at options for a few months but when the Worker Trousers by The Modern Sewing Co were released recently I instantly wanted to make them. They've also been really popular within the sewing community too. They have been designed to fit around the waist, ballooingin at the upper thighs and then tapering at the ankles.

I enjoyed the challenge of sewing a fly with bias binding (there is also the option to sewing it with a button fly too), and jeans-like features such as the back pockets and belt loops. I didn't need to do much fitting at all, which was a pleasant surprise! I have been wearing them out and about - they are comfy and will be great now we are heading into Winter.

Fit

The fit was good on the toile I made (size 12) and I didn't need to make any changes around the waist but I did straighten the side seams at the upper thighs because I didn't want to make the trousers with the ballooning style, opting for a straighter leg. I am 5ft 6" and when the hems were rolled up they finished at the top of my boots so if you were taller or wanted to wear them with a different style of shoe you might want to lengthen.

Instructions

I found the instructions to be clear and easy to follow. There are written instructions accompanied with hand drawn illustrations for each step. I liked the finishing details including the topstitching along the side seams. I did need to take my time and double check the fly constructions as this was more tricky to follow. I pinned these pieces to check first before sewing in place.

Supplies

The fabric is a hazel coloured Cotton Faille from the New Craft House with matching thread and I used a jeans zipper in black and gold. I would say this fabric has a medium weight, which meant it wasn't too bulky to sew multiple layers but the trousers have a structure.
