Cocoon Jacket review

This was my first make of the Cocoon jacket. I’d bought a navy patterned wool fabric but had to think about the lining as my first and second choice were too thick I felt similar settled on a navy paisley satin like fabric. I cut it in a size 12 (UK) as that matched my bust measurement and since the jacket was described as relaxed I felt it would work over my hips (closer to a 14). As I was making it up I felt it was going to be a little tight on the hips so just reduced my seam allowance on the side seams. It fitted well as a result. It was an easy make with good insructions. I did decide to top stitch all the way around to ensure the lining stayed flat and I also used a bias strip of the lining fabric to hem the sleeves. I’m very pleased with the result and I’m sure I’ll make this again…probably just grading to a size 14 below the bust. It felt like it took me longer to assemble the PDF printed pattern and cut the fabric than it did to sew it. Sewing time was I think under half a day and then the time for the pattern assembly and cutting out to add on. I also managed to get this out of a generous 1m (more like 1.2m) having mistakenly ordered just a single metre of fabric instead of 2.

Cocoon Jacket - Sew Different

A really flattering shape/ cut that has got lots of compliments.
The bottom part of the sleeve allows for contrast fabric- as does the front bottom of the coat( although I didn’t do this)
My version is made in a thick wool with contrast textured sleeve and plain blue lining.
The sleeves have been lengthened to full length for winter wear
The pockets inset into the front seam are a great design feature- more stylish imo than patch pockets and probably easier to execute neatly
Highly recommended- spring version planned!

Cocoon coat - Sew Different

This pattern is by Sew Different.
Pattern sizes included in the Cocoon Jacket pattern are UK sizes 8 to 26.
The pattern is printed on a good quality printer weight paper. The instructions are very clear with good illustrations with good layout illustrations for different widths of fabric. The design is a very interesting one and the resulting shape of the coat is attractive. It would be a really good candidate for using different colours for each of the different sections of the fronts and sleeves. The pattern indicates that the time taken to make this coat should be around 2 - 3 hours. I found this not to be the case. However, that could be because I used a heavy weight double sided wool fabric. As a result I spent rather more time than probably required, hand sewing to keep the layers flat. The thinner lining is hand stitched to the inside side seams and around the armholes. Only the fronts are lined on the original pattern. My own version has elongated sleeves since I did not wish to have a coat with shorter sleeves. The original pattern should end with lower edge of the plaid section of the sleeves on my coat. If you visit the designer's website, you will find a hack to adapt the coat. This gives a high collar and also a button band for the front edges. The website is: www.sewdifferent.co.uk
