Papercut Patterns Children's Nova Coat and Jacket

I planned this coat for well over a year before making it because I expected to mess it up. But the end result makes me really happy. Maybe waffle cotton is an odd choice for a coat, but I don’t mind. The lining was an old maxi dress that I never wore. And the ‘good egg’ KATM label seemed appropriate.

After reading tons of other people’s reviews I made a toil in the smallest size and then went one size up in the end.  I’m not that small (B40, W32, H40) so I was too scared to make the smallest size, but I probably could have done.  This fit is generous but it’s cold up north so I’ll likely be wearing jumpers underneath.

I added some big hook-and-bar closures to the front edges so the coat can be closed, and I think I’ll also add a chain to hang it up at the back.

Despite having very interesting pattern pieces, this didn’t take too long to make.  Bagging out the lining was really enjoyable, once I’d sewn the left lining to the left sleeve, rather than the other way round - briefly making some sort of egg yolk coloured straight jacket.

I think I’ll make another one in due course, maybe the shorter length, maybe coloured blocked, since I’ve seen some lovely versions made by other people.

This jacket is made in a polyester lurex fabric purchased from The Fabric Store. I believe this fabric was originally used by Mark Jacobs. I love a bold geometric or leopard print fabric especially for evening events. I got this pattern as a Christmas present in a beautiful kit from Fabric Godmother. It came with this lovely soft, pink mohair outer fabric and silky lining, plus the thread and interfacing. I made it during the early weeks of lockdown, and I was so happy with the finished result!

The cocoon silhouette of this pattern is very flattering and although the construction looks complicated at first, it is really clever the way it comes together. I had to read through the instruction booklet a few times to understand how the front pieces were sewn together to ensure I placed the nap of the fabric the correct way. I somehow managed to cut the cuffs with the nap going in the opposite direction, but you can't really tell and it doesn't take away from the over all look of the coat!

I have worn this throughout the Spring and during the last few weeks, however with the weather turning colder I think it may be time to put it away until next year! I love this pattern and have gotten lots of compliments on it. I can't wait to make another in a satin crepe for an evening look.

When I signed up for The Fold Line's amazing online Sewing Weekender event I knew I wanted to utilise the rare occasion of a whole weekend dedicated sewing time to one large project I have wanted to complete for ages.

Despite having a large UFO to finish I went with the Sapporo Coat by Papercut Patters because I literally have SO many of these saved from instagram for inspiration and I knew I would love it as a garment, especially as a throw over in the transition seasons.

​I had in my mind a bright mustard yellow one and hunted and hunted for the right, affordable fabric (tricky when coating is so pricey).  I found this fab one from Minerva but when it came it was much more ochre in tone and I have to say I was a bit disappointed when it arrived. It proved incredibly tricky to work with but I found ways to overcome the challenges and you can read more about that on my blog here 

Assembly wise there was nothing that was tricky or hard to understand and both the pattern and instructions were fab :)

​The Sapporo Coat is a total legend on the indie sewing scene and I was keen to see if it lived up the hype... I was not disappointed!  It was my first foray into coat making for myself having only ever done some soft tailoring for clients during my bridal days, and I learnt quite a bit, the bagging out of a lining is totally magic!

I feel so glamorous and snug in this coat and I literally want to make a thousand more to accompany the many Zadie Jumpsuits I have in my head!

I have been wanting to make this pattern ever since I saw so many amazing versions of it. I bought the upgraded pattern for the Sapporo. I decided to size down a couple of sizes- made the smallest size and it fits great.
