Buy the Dulcie Pinafore sewing pattern from Jennifer Lauren Handmade. Dulcie is a structured, button-front pinafore press with a square neckline, semi-fitted A-line skirt, and square in-set pockets. Princess seams provide shaping through the bodice for a smooth fit over the bust and back, while the deep, roomy pockets carry all of your daily essentials. The bodice is fully lined for a clean inside finish, and optional topstitching in key areas can add a modern element to an otherwise 60s mod design.

Dulcie works perfectly paired with knit tops (Dulcie is styled here with a Gable Top, but Ostara, Bronte and Vielle would also look lovely) as well as lightweight blouses like the Aisling Blouse.

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

– PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Suggested fabrics: The Dulcie Pinafore is best suited to mid-weight fabrics with some structure. Denim, corduroy, wool, suitings, tweeds and mammoth flannel will make a great Dulcie Pinafore. For the bodice lining, look for lightweight woven fabrics such as cotton lawn or voile to help reduce seam allowance bulk.

Fabric requirements: Extra may be required for pattern/print matching or adding length.

Main fabric: 150 cm (60") wide fabric: Sizes 6-14, 1.75 m (1.91 yd) / Sizes 16-24, 2 m (2.18 yd) / Sizes 26-34, 2.25 m (2.46 yd) // 115 cm (45") wide fabric: Sizes 6-14, 2.25 m (2.46 yd) / Sizes 16-24**, 2.5 m (2.73 yd) / Sizes 26-34**, 3.5 m (3.82 yd).

Lining fabric: 150 cm (60") wide fabric: Sizes 6-14, 0.5 m (0.54 yd) / Sizes 16-24, 0.65 m (0.71 yd) / Sizes 26-34, 0.6 m (0.66 yd) // 115 cm (45") wide fabric: Sizes 6-14, 0.75 m (0.82 yd) / Sizes 16-24, 0.8 m (0.87 yd) / Sizes 26-34, 0.85 m (0.93 yd).

** Not suitable for fabric with directional print/nap/texture due to waistband circumference and how the pattern piece needs to be laid.

Sizing: UK 6 - 24 with A - D cups or UK 16 - 34 with C - F cups. Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.

Note: There is a crossover of 2 cups (C and D) and 5 sizes (16 – 24) between the Original and Curve size ranges. The Original and Curve patterns are based on two different blocks, and because of this, the shape, ease and proportions of the crossover patterns vary depending on the block used. Please check both size charts if you fall into this range.

To determine your cup size, wear supportive undergarments, then keeping your tape measure parallel to the floor (make sure it is not dipping at the back), measure both your full bust (the widest part of your bust, all the way around) and your high bust (the upper part of your bust around and under the arm pits). Use the difference between these measurements to determine your approximate cup size: A cup = 1 cm (3/8"), B cup = 3 cm (1 1/4"), C cup = 5 cm (2"), D cup = 7.5 cm (3"), E cup = 10 cm (4"), F cup = 12.5 cm (4 7/8"). Then, to determine your bodice size, find your full bust measurement (or closest to) along your corresponding cup row on the size chart.

Notions: Twelve 2 cm (3/4") buttons; approx. 32 cm x 145 cm (12 5/8" x 57 1/8") rectangle of lightweight fusible interfacing; matching and/or contrast thread.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (54 pages for sizes 6-24, 59 pages for sizes 16-34); A0 copy shop pattern (2 sheets for sizes 6-24, 3 sheets for sizes 16-34). This pattern has the layers function so you can select your size(s) before printing.

Alternative to the Pippi Pinafore

I previously reviewed the Pippi Pinafore by Jennifer Lauren handmade and I really loved the quirky design for summer. Jennifer’s latest pinafore pattern is much better suited to wear to the office with jumpers underneath now that the weather is getting colder. The fitting is not as tight as the Pippi, but that is a good thing as it means plenty of room to fit a jumper underneath.

I went for the UK size 6 and A cup sewing pattern, it fitted just right - not too tight or too loose. Only thing I would change is making it a bit shorter in length (currently just above the knee) as wearing tights you can get away with it.

The fabric chosen was liberty cord in Star Anise print and the bodice was lined with Star Anise tana lawn, with the skirt lined in a navy bemberg cupro fabric to prevent it riding up when wearing over tights.

Lovely pattern would definitely recommend.

Best,

Abi x
