Grainline Studio Thayer Jacket

After a good deal of review research I choose size 8 in accordance with my bust measurement with no adjustments and just went for it. The size is perfect! It fits beautifully on the shoulders and as a spring weight jacket (mine is lined with a medium weight cotton) is perfect for a couple of layers underneath.

The jacket features a slight A-line shape with two roomy patch pockets and two in-seam yoke pockets. The front bodice princess seams and two piece sleeves ensure a great fit and form. That, along with lots of top stitch detailing gave this jacket a beautiful finish!
I took my time and it paid off.

One thing I did alter was the collar width at the front. I thought some of the collars on others looked a little mean for what I was going for so I took the collar piece from the Papercut Patterns Stacker Jacket to compare and adjusted the Thayer collar width at the front to match it. So I've really just added about 5/8'' to the length of the collar point.

I've been wanting to sew a coat/jacket for a while now and fell in love with look of the Thayer, especially with the cord and fluffy lining so I decided to replicate that with a navy cord for the shell, grey cotton Sherpa for the body lining and navy brushed cotton for the sleeves lining, I also used gunmetal buttons which went better with the grey and navy than chrome.

The pattern instructions were easy to follow and I really enjoyed sewing the whole project. I'm still a beginner and this was my first jacket, all my other garments have been simple cami's or tops so it did take me several days to complete.

The sherpa fabric had some stretch and the buttonholes took more time than usual as the layers wouldn't feed smoothly through my machine but it makes such a cozy lining I would use it again.

This is a lovely casual jacket pattern, with topstitching details throughout and plenty of opportunities for making it your own. Workwear style, it has three pieces on each of the fronts and back, with in-seam pockets in the front yolk  as well as substantial patch pockets. It’s fully lined and has a back collar stand as part of the collar. The lining is bagged out through the collar opening and the collar sewn on last.
All this means you can have contrast lining and different fabric for the collar too. My version was a kit from Guthrie and Ghani fabric shop, which came with brushed heavy cotton for the outer fabric, plaid cotton twill for the lining, and shearling for the collar. This was an excellent fabric combination but it would also work well in any medium to heavyweight denim, corduroy or twill, and you could use a quilted or padded lining.
On sizing, my measurements put me at a size 8 bust and size 10 waist and hip. Looking at the finished garment measurements and the A-line shape, I cut a straight size 8, and have plenty of room in my jacket.
The instructions and accompanying illustrations are clear and straightforward to follow. It’s more of an involved sew because of the details on the front and the topstitching, but an ideal project to take a bit of time over to get a long-lasting casual jacket.

All in all, a great pattern.

The joy of slow sewing, really took my time with this Grainline Thayer jacket and really enjoyed it. This is a great pattern, brilliant instructions and sewalong , no major fitting issues apart from narrowing the shoulders. Added a few tailoring techniques i.e sleeveheads and interfaced the hems to get a good finish. I also sewed manual buttonholes instead of using my automatic buttonhole attachment
