Versatile and rewarding

Although I came late to the Cielo Dress and Top party, I’m glad I eventually did because this pattern is so enjoyable to make and the result has been rewarding to wear. I was looking for a simple linen dress to wear in hot, humid weather so I chose this one for its clean lines and generous pockets which are intriguingly constructed.

The instructions are extremely clear and the pieces all fitted together perfectly. The construction is very straightforward and the pocket and shoulder details keep it interesting. I would recommend this to a beginner looking to practise or develop their skills. Setting in sleeves is always a particular challenge for me and I avoided it completely here as the sleeves are sewn in one pass along with the side seams.  Choosing a medium-weight pure linen fabric worked well as it gave the dress some body.

The pattern is versatile so you get good value for money; I had a length of cotton lawn in my stash and used it to make the top version with three-quarter length sleeves. This again was easy to make and amenable to modification: I lengthened the body by a few centimetres. The only tricky part for me was finishing the cuffs neatly. I stitched in the ditch, but next time I will finish the cuffs by hand to get a tidier result.

Quick smart top

I’ve made this pattern a few times but I think this top was one of the first.  It’s made from a cotton sheet with a small geometric print which made it lovely and simple to keep grain lines straight.  A friend saw mine and asked me to make one the same, which is usually a sign of a good pattern.  The cuffs look smart and the construction is neat and satisfying.  I wear this a lot.

Cielo sweater - Closet Core Patterns

I decided to create a hybrid version of view A with the sleeves of view B minus the ruffled shoulders. Michelle Sews has an awesome tutorial on how to adjust the sleeves to remove the gathers.

For the two versions I’ve made I’ve used a non-stretch wool ponte. Both garments are mainly sewn on the overlocker apart from hemming, neckband and darts. I used pre-made bias binding around the neckline.

After reviewing the size chart, and reading a few reviews, I decided to size down two sizes! The sizing chart recommended a size 14 but I made a size 10 with the C-cup pattern pieces. The sizing is perfect for me – I wouldn’t want it any bigger.

Comfortable top if a little roomy

I've been looking for a top pattern with interesting sleeves for a while. I thought the Cielo pattern view B looked quite good and i particularly wanted to 'audition' it for the top of a 'hacked' dress I am putting together. I have in mind Vogue 9236 with the Cielo bodice/sleeves in a liberty lawn or poplin.

I had a 100% cotton grey and white striped seersucker in my stash that i bought at Tessuti in Melbourne. I also wanted to try out altering the cup size to a D from the B cup which Closet Core said their patterns are drafted to.

The D cup size was spot on. I used a size 14 as that was what my measurements were closest to but it ended up being very boxy in shape... especially as i added quite a bit to the length as View A is cropped to sit at the waist.

I added 2 long darts to each side of the lower bodice lining up with the bust darts and just one each side in the back. It is still a little roomy but works ok and I can really see how it might look as a dress with vogue 9236.

All the facings lined up, it was easy to make.I did finish off the cuff on the wrong side with a proper hem and hand stitching as its much neater than the pattern instructions.

So I think next summer I will give the combined pattern dress a go in some lovely liberty lawn. I will also try Cielo Version A or C but cut it longer for my long body as it looks a nice easy top for wovens.
