Buy the B5880 Dress sewing pattern from Butterick. It’s perfect for an advanced beginner dressmaker. Lined dress (loose-fitting through bust) has semi-fitted skirt, side back seams, self-lined overlay with left side tuck, side zipper and self belt. Circa 1951.

This is such a great pattern. Originally printed in 1951 and reissued with as much impact. I love the way that this dress can be styled with vintage accessories with an 80s/90s edge or be dressed down for today with DM boots and a denim jacket.
It's fundamentally a very simple garment to sew but that drape piece is quite large so you'll need a big cutting table or a fair amount of floor space! The sewing level is classified as 'easy', which it kind of is but you will need a level of patience with some elements of hand-sewing – the lining needs to be sewn at the shoulders, the bodice to the waist and the side seam to the zipper tape and the hemline (if you are that way inclined!)
All worth it though as the lining gives a good weight and makes it feel very special. I used a poly moss crepe in a red leopard print for the main fabric which was great for that side drape. Constructing the pleats for that section was a bit tricky but thankfully the pattern cover includes a QR code linked to a great tutorial by Professor Pincushion.
