Suggested fabricsLight/medium weight woven fabric. Fabrics with a good balance of structure and drape are ideal. Examples include cotton poplin, cotton lawn and linen. Fabrics with more drape such as rayon and some silks are beautiful but the end fit will be a little more relaxed. Stiffer/thicker fabrics will result in a more structured dress which can look fabulous. Soft fabrics such as double gauze or muslin will create a very relaxed, comfortable, casual dress.

Fabric requirements140 cm (55″) wide fabric: Below the knee length, 240 - 460 cm (2 5/8 - 5 yd) // Calf length, 270 - 460 cm (3 - 5 yd) // Maxi length, 300 - 460 cm (3 1/4 - 5 yd).

Sizes XXS - XL: The tie is not included in the yardage. If you are making a tie, you will need up to 100 cm (1 yd) extra.

Sizes XXL - 7XL: The yardage is the same for the tie and no-tie options. But the skirt for these sizes is wider than 140 cm (55") so you will need to 1) source wider fabric, 2) turn your pattern piece 90 degrees (the yardage above is based on this option, but it may not be suitable for some fabrics), 3) create your skirt front and skirt back from two pieces, or 4) use a smaller skirt (as the skirt is very full with a lot of gathered fabric).

Sizing: XXS – 7XL (approx. UK 6 – 34/36, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart.

Notions: Scrap of lightweight interfacing for the pockets and neck facing.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/legal/letter print-at-home pattern (48 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets); projector pattern. This pattern has layers so you can print just the sizes(s) you need.

My new favourite dress!

The Kinjarling dress is easy to sew, comfy to wear and great for showing off pretty printed fabric!

It's nice to have some options within the pattern so you could make a slightly different dress every time if you wanted. For this version, I used the round neckline (with facing), in-seam pockets, calf-length skirt and no waist ties.

The instructions have a good level of detail and are easy to follow. Having said that, I did go a bit off-piste - the instructions have you sew the whole front and whole back and then join them all down the side seams to make the dress, but I sewed the bodice and skirt and then joined them at the waist.

The instructions use French seams for everything but the waist seam. This is a nice touch because it gives a clean and neat finish on the inside, but with the fabric I used (a medium-weight cotton), I found that the seams around the pockets were a bit bulky so if I make another Kinjarling in a similar fabric, I'd probably just use French seams on the bodice and use regular seams on the skirt.

I made the size recommended for my measurements and the fit turned out nicely - it's relaxed as intended, but not too oversized or baggy. The only adjustment I made was to lengthen the bodice by 1.5", which is normal for me.
