Suggested fabrics: The Nicks Dress and Blouse shines in a variety of light to midweight wovens with moderate drape. For a flowy and ethereal effect, try rayon challis, viscose, silk crepe, chiffon, charmeuse, or georgette. For more body, try cotton shirting, batiste, voile, chambray, or linen.

Fabric requirements:

View A: 45″ (1.15 m) wide fabric (sizes 0-14 only): 5.25 - 5.5 yd (4.75 - 5 m) // 58″ (1.5 m) wide fabric: 4.75 - 5.25 yd (4.25 - 4.75 m).

View B: 45″ (1.15 m) wide fabric (sizes 0-14 only): 2.25 - 2.5 yd (2 - 2.25 m) // 58″ (1.5 m) wide fabric: 2.25 yd (2 m).

View C: 45″ (1.15 m) wide fabric (sizes 0-14 only): 2.25 - 2.75 yd (2 - 2.5 m) // 58″ (1.5 m) wide fabric: 1.5 - 2.25 yd (1.25 - 2 m).

Sizing: 0 – 20 (approx. UK 6 – 20, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

This size range is based on a B cup bust and an average height of 5’6″. Please note that B cup does not refer to bra sizing, but rather to the difference in inches between high and full bust. A 2″ difference between those measurements is equivalent to a B cup.

Notions: View A: 2 yd (2 m) of 1/2" (13 mm) wide elastic // Views A and B: five 1/2" (12 mm) buttons // View C: 1/2 yd (0.5 m) of 1/2" (13 mm) wide elastic; 10" x 10" (25 cm x 25 cm) lightweight interfacing.

Love this pattern!

There are so many options here! I made the long sleeved dress with cheap viscose as it requires 5metres. Looks good and feels fabulous. Then I made a short sleeved blouse. Good instructions, easy to follow. What next? Tiered top? Long sleeved blouse? Short sleeved dress?

Fabulous! - Nicks dress & blouse

I made this in a light viscose and I love it. The pattern was a straightforward sew for an intermediate sewer. I took time with the gathering and used a basting length gathering stitch a quarter inch above and below the seam line, which works well for me and I use this method all the time.
I had issues with the rouleau strip and in future I would use elastic for this make. Otherwise, no issues. With the fabric, I laid it out first and thought about the best use of the pattern. I decided to have vertical stripes on the lowest tier, for interest and so I didn’t have to worry about matching the stripes above. I have already worn this twice and I’m not a big wearer of dresses.
I love dress patterns, so expanding my wardrobe. Next is the new sew over it dress with the curved buttons.

Nicks Dress

When I first saw the Nicks dress I knew it was a pattern I wanted to make up right away and here is my version. I have made it in a Liberty Tana lawn. This pattern is very fabric hungry requiring nearly 5 meters of fabric for this longer version though with a bit of juggling of the pattern pieces I have nearly a metre spare for another project so it is possible to get away with slightly less fabric in my opinion. Like all Closet core patterns the instructions are clear and comprehensive although there does seem to be an error in the pattern on the part for constructing the cuff which has you making it inside out. This is easily corrected but irritating. There is a lot of gathering for the three tiers and I would suggest doing the bottom tier at least in two parts rather than trying to get the gathers all the way round. I have french seamed the insides and I love the way this dress has turned out . I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5 for the cuff error instructions but otherwise a very enjoyable make.
