Buy the Burnside Bibs sewing pattern from Sew House Seven. The Burnside Bibs are not your traditional work overalls. Yes, they are comfortable and easy to wear, yet they are much more stylish and feminine than traditional versions. The straps that transition to narrower ties offer many options for how they can be tied. And like so many sewing patterns, you can influence how casual or dressed up they become simply by fabric choice. Choose a fabric with some drape, such as Tencel, and pair them with a silk blouse and heels for a dressed up look. Use a more traditional denim or linen and wear them with a tee shirt, sneakers or clogs for a more casual approach.

The Burnside Bibs feature a front waistband, curved front patch pockets, optional back pockets, and cross-back straps that transition to narrower ties that thread through back waist belt loops forming back waist gathers. They may be tied in many ways - at the back, front or sides. The legs are somewhat wide and can be made full length or cropped. There are two front bib options - a scooped neck or the traditional straight front. Both bibs work with either Version 1 or Version 2.

Version 1 is a more fitted back pant with back waist darts and an invisible side zipper opening; however, the ties still form a small amount of gathers at the back waist.

Version 2 is a looser back pant that slips on over your hips and does not have a closure to sew. This version is fuller and more gathered in the back. Use your hip measurement to determine your size for Version 2.

Bonus: The PDF and copy shop patterns now include an additional front pocket option (a pocket with straight edges and an angled corner).

Suggested fabrics: For a dressy, flowy version, use light to mid-weight woven fabrics that are not too stiff and preferably with some drape, such as Tencel, linen, wool gabardine or sandwashed silk. For a more utilitarian and casual look, use fabrics such as denim, canvas or cotton twill.

Fabric requirements: Allow extra fabric if matching stripes or plaids or using border prints.

Fabulous pattern, some errors

Unfortunately I can't see whether I've managed to upload a photo of me wearing this, but it looks pretty much as I expected it to.  I did make a smaller size than I need because I cut the paper pattern out last year before I put on weight.  However, it still looks good although it's a little snug around the middle when I sit down!

This is a fantastic pattern - everything goes where it should and everything is the right size.  I didn't need to line up notches because they just fell into place.  No easing, no head-scratching.  I haven't made dungarees before but it was easy to follow the instructions and I really enjoyed making these overalls.

I did have a few issues, and only one of those is a gripe.  Firstly, unless you are a puritanical, world champion (and possibly masochistic) tube-turner, use Method 2 for the ties.  I used a lightweight twill and it was impossible to turn the ties once sewn.  There are no instructions to trim the seam allowance but I did this anyway and it made no difference.  The problem is that the end of the tie is turned and stitched, so that after you've seamed it there are four layers of fabric in the first half inch of the tube and it just WILL NOT turn.  I ended up cutting out another tie/strap combo and using the much easier Method 2 (belt loop/bias tape method).

Secondly, the instructions for the belt loops are not correct.  You're required to make 8x 8cm loops from a piece of fabric which is only 51cm long.  I made 6, and so far that's not a problem.  Once you've threaded the ties through, you can leave them there and take the overalls off and on - but it took me a while to thread them through in the first place so six loops is enough for me! Obviously you can make a couple more if you prefer.

I highly recommend this pattern.  Even though it's a size too small, the overalls still look good and have a very flattering shape.  My daughter saw them and asked me for a pair so that's got to count for something!

Burnside Bibs - Sew House Seven

I made these Burnside Bibs during the course of one day in a cotton/linen blend. I sewed a straight size 14 and they fit brilliantly with no alterations.
They are very comfortable to wear and planning a denim pair for the Autumn.
I'm so impressed with this pattern. I usually have to fiddle to get a good fit. It is an intermediate pattern but nothing too challenging that a confident beginner couldn't tackle. The instructions are excellent and all the notches lined up as they should.
