SEW THE TRENDS: AUTUMN 24 - PART 1

SEW THE TRENDS: AUTUMN 24 - PART 1
Kate Underdown

The seasons are changing, as we head into Autumn I've hit the high street to find this seasons core trends so that you can sew them. Come on an adventure with me and see what you should add to your 'make list' this winter.

I've decided to split this video into two, so make sure you check back in next week for part two..

This week, we focus on fabrics, colours, print and outerwear. Everything is covered in the video but the images are also below if you wanted to take a closer look at anything.

A lot of the articles I read about this season said that the focus was less on silhouette and more on texture. Having seen the offering in store I completely agree. Let's start with fabrics..

Fabrics & Colours:

Satin was probably the fabric that featured the most in shops, everything from tops to dresses. It was styled with lots of other textures and makes a perfect base.

Leather was another big trend for this winter, jackets, skirts and trousers being the big hitters. Mainly dark greens, blacks and browns for colours.

If you are looking for a hug in a fabric then you are going to be very happy with the addition of shearling this winter. Mainly seen in jackets and coats because of it's weight.

Print was pretty sparse again this season except for this this roarsome number. Leopard print is back in and I'm personally delighted as I love it.  It works so well with so many other colours that's it's a really easy addition to your wardrobe.

One trend I noticed in the shops and online was tonal dressing. Wearing the same shade or same range of colours in an outfit. I actually really like this as an idea as you instantly look put together. This is also something that you can proably put together with things you have in your wardrobe already.

Following on from tonal dressing was texture play. As you can see it's a pretty paired back colour palette but the mix of fabrics add depth to you outfit. Think shearling and satin with a big chunky knit.
Finally before we start on the looks, lets get our colour palette sorted.

As you can see it's quite muted this season. Blacks, greys, oaty browns, bitter browns greens and burgandy. The great thing is you are likely to have some to these colours in your wardrobe already.

Outerwear:

This was probably the only department where there were bountiful offerings. It felt like the shops had focused on one big

First up is the bomber jacket. As you can see there were quite a few iterations in terms of the silhouette but I've got a couple of great patterns for you.

The two patterns I have chosen ate the Fibre Mood Vinny as it's oversized and similar proportions. If you like something a little slimer fitting them the Trend Patterns Bomber is great.
Next up is the Car Coat or Barn Coat as I've seen it called. Boxy and it comes in different lengths. The crucial detail is the cord collar and a lot of them are in a sandy colour too.
Three fantastic options that tick most of the boxes. For a longer coat the Darcy Coat from Modern Sewing Co. has perfect proportions. For something in the middle is the Style Arc Logan and for something a little shorter the Chalk and Notch Den.

Next up is shearling coats, these came in a few iterations but generally were oversized. Made both in leather and suede and in muted tones.
Three fantastic options here. The Vikisews Madison jacket for your classic biker jacket. It's got lots of seams and is an involved make so if you wanted something simpler the Sew Over it Amelia would work too. Just make sure to size up to make it less fitted. Lastly is the Grainline Cortland Trench, it's boxy shape would worl well in a shearling fabric.
The trench coat is another pattern that is back for winter. Perfect now in this trans-seasonal phase, many were made in a thick cotton but also in wool so would work well for winter.
Three fantastic patterns for you, first up is the Vogue V2055 a newish pattern and great proportions. Next the Papercut Eliza is great if you wanted something with a trench feel but a little more paired back. Finally I couldn't talk about trenches without mentioning the Named Isla as it's a sewing community favourite.
Finally we've got the wrap coat, perfect for shoving on over big jumpers. I like to think of this coat as a secret dressing gown you are allowed to wear out in the world. It'll keep you nice and cosy.
If you like a big statement collar the the McCalls M8438 is perfect and also comes with a variating to make it sleeveless. If you like the notched collar then the Bella Loves Patterns Grace coat is an absolute banger!
I really hopes you enjoyed the first instalment of Sew The Trends. I look forward to seeing you next week for part 2.
