SEW THE TRENDS: AUTUMN (PART 2)
Kate Underdown

We are back with our second installment from Sew The Trends… this is a two-part blog so if you missed that last one please go back and have a read. So having got to grips with fabrics, colours, outerwear, and dresses in part one we now move on to tops..

We start with the humble shirt. These fall into two camps, the boxy boyfriend shirt in a crisp cotton or a softer drape version. If we looked at a line drawing of these there wouldn’t be a huge difference but it’s all about the fabrics.

If you love the boxy oversized look then the Carry Blouse is fantastic with an amazing pleated sleeve. For something with a little less detail, the unisex shirt is a wardrobe staple you’ll never tire of. If the floaty blouse is tickling your fancy then the Everyday Shirt or the Jenna Blouse are great options.

Knitwear was a big feature this season, with lots of lovely cozy styles in classic shapes, three of the most popular styles are above. The oversized polo neck, a classic crew neck as well as a cropped cardigan.

If the polo neck is your jam then the Merilyn sweat is great, a lovely loose cut, dropped sleeves and that all-important bit collar. For a really simple crew then we love the Carol sweater, it’s not too fitted or too baggy. The cropped cardigan HAS to be the Marlo sweater, hugely popular, it’s become a firm favourite amongst makers.

Other knitwear that featured in a lot of shops is the knitted tank. A great layering piece, this was around last winter and is back again. If you like a big collar then this look is for you, make it in a knit and sweatshirt fabric.

For the tank the Pierce vest is a great starting point,  you’d just need to tweak the neckline. The Didi pullover is such a great transitional piece that will take you into winter and beyond.

If you are going to make one item this year then the tailored trouser is a must. They come in two lengths and the great thing about making our own clothes is that it’s a really easy alteration to make.

I thought the Spencer woven pants were a perfect option, high-waisted with pleats at the front. Another pattern that would work well is the Mitchell Trousers. Intersting pockets and great tailoring details like the side tabs, just alter the length to suit.

Next up in the trouser department, we have the barrel leg. This is a personal favourite a relaxed fit that tapers in at the ankle. Next up is essentially a jogger with a matching top these are this season’s secret pyjamas.

If you love the barrel leg style then the Chanterelle is perfect if you are looking for an easier make. The elasticated waist makes the fitting a breeze. For those who don’t want an elastic waist then the Worker trousers are wonderful, high-waisted, and super chic. For the knit trousers, the Olo set comes with both the trousers and the top. The Avalon pants from Tessuti are another great option, a little more structured but you’d never know they were made from jersey.

Skirts are a hot topic this season, with lots of fantastic options out there. The denim midi skirt that was very much in this summer is back for winter. If you like the cargo trend but can’t face going back to the 90s then the cargo skirt is a great option. The simple slip skirt is back again this winter. I think this is another useful item, wear it with an oversized jumper for a more casual look.

The Cameron skirt is a great option for the midi denim skirt, complete with the split up the front and great seam details on the waist. For the Cargo skirt then grab a copy of the latest Fibre Mood Magazine, you might want to cut the skirt slightly shorter so it hits your ankle. For a great slip skirt then check out the Evie from Tessuti, it’s been a really popular pattern.

Right so that is it from Sew the Trends we hope you’ve found something fab to make this season. Even if it’s just looking through what you’ve already got in your wardrobe or stash and putting new items together.
