INSPIRATION FROM LONDON FASHION WEEK 2022
Whether you follow the catwalks or not, we are all likely to see details cropping up on the high street and sewing patterns that are inspired by the runway shows. London Fashion Week is an exciting time where established and emerging designers show their collections for the following season. You’ll see colours, textures and techniques that might inspire your autumn/winter sewing this year.
We thought we’d take a look at some of the incredible pieces that were shown last week and see if there are any themes we could see translating into DIY dressmakers’ closets.
Simone Rocha is a firm favourite. I find the dreamy designs incredibly inspiring. They are so romantic, but also strong. Looking at the AW collection, I thought there was an interesting thread of mixing fabric textures together in a garment. It could be an interesting way to upcycle existing garments or use a small piece of luxurious fabric in garments without committing to the entire thing. I also can’t go without sharing my excitement at that sleeve on the central coat. As a lover of big sleeves, I say bring it on!
If you are a fan of the BBC programme Killing Eve, you have probably admired Molly Goddard’s fabulous pink tulle creation. Molly Goddard’s AW22 collection has a nod to the 80s and references from people watching in West London as a child (read more in the Vogue article). We have been loving details in the sewing community. Big sleeves, statement collars, frills… I think we might be ready for the ruffle? Who’s with me?
The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel isn’t going to be the only thing adding some vintage inspo to our sewing! Richard Quinn’s show was full of stunningly crafted and structured garments that had a timeless, vintage feel to them. There was lots of volume in the collection, one of my favourite things about the 50s silhouettes. I also hugely appreciate the floral prints.
It’s always nice to see some of the ‘high street’ brands shows as their designs would usually translate to our own wardrobes a little better. Rixo shared their AW22 collection, the Golden Age, which was inspired by looking at celebrations from the past. The 30s did have some of the most wonderful details so this is a collection I could definitely get on board with… if I had somewhere fancy to go that is!
I was quite taken with the tailoring from Erdem’s show. The frock coat on the right is particularly beautiful and the marigold hue of the central coat is just my kind of shade. The collection also has 1930s influences, this time from progressive 1930s Berlin. The dresses are also simply stunning and I love the way the colours are dotted through this dark and moody palette.
