WHAT TO SEW FOR A BEACH HOLIDAY

Are you jetting off on a beach holiday this summer? Planning your packing can be a bit of a headache, and when you are planning on being beach or poolside for most of it, you really don't need to pack too much. I am guilty of way overpacking on my own trips, so I am going to save you room in your case for all the books you want to bring, as I have rounded up ten essential items you can sew for your getaway.

You might also want to take a look at our round up of travel essentials to sew, to make the journey there a little more relaxing!

Swimwear

Pattern pick: Helen's Closet Sunstar Swimsuit

You are going to spend a lot of time in your swimsuit, so picking the right one to sew is key. Sunstar is an excellent choice as you can make a one and two-piece from one pattern, depending on your preference. The crossover front that offers good coverage and thin shoulder straps that are reinforced with elastic, while the bottoms feature trendy high cut sides.

Beach Cover-Up

Pattern pick: Christine Haynes Unisex Piqué Lounge Tunic

A beach cover-up is probably one of the most useful things you will pack. You want something that you can throw on in between your bathing sessions that is comfortable and breezy. Piqué is a unisex design that will look great over any swimwear style. You might have observed that it looks great sewn in prints, so you can have fun with your fabric choice.

Throw-On Set

Pattern pick: Wardrobe by Me Camp Shirt and Shorts

I've spotted shirt and short sets all over the high street this season and I have the perfect pattern for sewing your own! The Camp Shirt and Shorts set can be worn together when you're heading to the beach and you can split the duo up to wear with other things to make them work for that space in your case. Why not wear the shirt open to show off your handmade swimsuit underneath!

Beach Bag

Pattern pick: Kylie & the Machine Mule Tote Bag

There is a whole host of things required for a beach day, meaning you need a bag to chuck it all in. The Mule Tote Bag comes in three sizes, so you can sew the size that suits your carrying requirement... mine would be the maxi size! If you have kids, you could even sew the small size for them so they can feel responsible for their own beach swag.

Sunhat

Pattern Pick: Merchant & Mills FREE Bucket Hat

Sun protection isn't just for your skin, it's a good idea to keep your head covered too. The free unisex Bucket Hat pattern is just what you need. It is easy to chuck in your bag, it won't get ruined when it gets sandy and it would even tolerate getting splashed by the sea. As a shade seeker, I would opt for the wide brim myself, but there is the narrow option for anyone that wants it!

Poolside Robe

Pattern pick: Wardrobe by Me Norma Jean Wrap

If, like me, you prefer to keep covered up when nipping to the loo or grabbing a drink from the pool bar, something you can throw over your swimsuit is very useful. Sew Norma Jean in a print or stripe for a poolside chic look and leave the waist tie off to make it feel more floaty than robe. It's also handy to have if you like to pop out onto the balcony in the mornings as it is a dressing gown after all!

Hot Weather PJs

Pattern pick: Maison Fauve Blush and Songe Pyjamas

You will of course, need an adorable pyjama set for your trip (those who forgo pjs, you do you!). This is a gorgeous set feels rather fancy and is going to keep you cool at night. You can even make it as a nightie if you prefer.

Sundress

Pattern pick: Tessuti Fabrics Astrid Sundress

When not reclining by the pool or beach, you might find yourself sightseeing or eating another dinner under the stars - it's a hard life, isn't it? Pack a dress that can take you from day to night, like Astrid. This breezy sundress is full of details that make it feel special. Sew it in a plain fabric to show off the topstitching, or in a fun print.

Day to Night Set

Pattern pick: Friday Patten Company Saguaro Set

This set will work hard for it's spot in your luggage. You can travel in the trousers and wear the set for going out to dinner in the balmy evenings. If you pack a skirt, you could wear the top with it to create a different look from just a few pieces. You can even wear the top forwards or backwards, so it will look like you packed way more than you did!

A Light Layer

Pattern pick: Les Perlines Layover Cardigan

When the sun goes down, it can get a little chilly at night, so a light layer is good to have to hand. The Layover Cardigan is designed for woven fabrics, so it is a little more blouse than slouch cardigan. Style it over your dresses, skirts and bottoms and it will look far from an afterthought.

I hope that's helped narrow down ideas for what to sew for your beach holiday. It's made me want to book a beach escape!
