TOP TEN TANK TOP SEWING PATTERNS

Are you looking to add this hero piece to your handmade wardrobe this spring/summer? A piece so useful, you are likely to wear it frequently. The humble tank top. It goes by many other names. Shell top, sleeveless top, A-line top, but to name a few. For the purpose of naming this blog post and fitting in all the best styles I have to share, we are going with 'tank top'.

Easy to sew and even easier to wear, this basic is a warm-weather essential. Tank tops are also having a moment as the simple shape is the perfect top part of a co-ord set. If you've been eyeing up this trend (or Beyond Nine's website), you might find the perfect pattern for recreating your ready-to-wear inspiration.

There are plenty of sewing patterns to pick from. There are the boxy ones, the fitted ones, the flowy ones and the unexpected ones. This list covers a multitude of styles and tastes to help you find (and sew) your dream tank top.

Sew Make Bake Sourdough Top

Great for: Sewing a set

New to the Fold Line Family, Sew Bake Make has a rather tempting tank top pattern. Sourdough is made for off-duty, weekending style. Designed with a range of options, this top will keep you busy at the machine. If you are one of the many obsessed with sewing co-ord sets, this pattern is perfect for the job. You can grab the Sourdough set (with the top and trousers/shorts), designed as the perfect pairing.

Helen's Closet Ashton Top

Great for: Icon status

Ashton is an icon in the sewing world. This much-loved sewing pattern is easy to sew, style and wear, so it's no surprise that people make it multiple times. If you are after a classic tank top with modern proportoins, you can't go wrong with Ashton. You can choose from a wide variety of woven fabrics, so it is a useful pattern to own if you have accumulated a bit of a fabric stash.

Atelier Brunette Le Top

Great for: Chic details

Chic is what you expect from a French designer, and Le Top doesn't dial back the chic factor. The front and back are as polished as it gets. The French seams and topstitching elevate the simple shape. What's more, there are four playful side styles – from buttons to laces – making it a real treat to wear and sew!

Fibre Mood Quilla Top

Great for: A novel sew

I am a huge fan of unexpected sewing details, and this sweet little summer top has a pretty special feature. A piece of elastic sewn into the side panels creates a really fun effect. The A-line shape will pair beautifully with high-waisted bottoms, so if you want to sew a cute co-ord that you absolutely cannot buy in the shops, try Quilla!

Matchy Matchy Split Peplum Tank

Great for: Colour blocking creativity

Business in the front, party in the back... this tank puts a surprising spin on a classic. The gathered peplum at the back will keep you cool when things get a little balmy, and gain you a multitude of compliments. You can sew your tank with a split down the centre front, allowing for maximum colour blocking creativity and scrap fabric consumption.

Itch to Stitch Santorini Tank

Great for: A fitted take

Lots of sewists plead for more fitted styles. If you are one of them, Santorni is likely to be the winning tank. The princess seams in the front and back gently shape the tank, and the buttons at the side are a lovely feature. Santorini comes with bust cup options (Sizes 00-20 have A, B, C, D and DD cups. Sizes 22-40 have B, C, D and DD cups), allowing you to achieve a custom fit without making the pattern alteration yourself.

Named Tami Dress and Top

Great for: A flowy feel

You might have written tank tops off if you prefer to wear more flowy, ethereal styles. I don't like to leave anyone out, so I picked this pretty pattern for you. The voluminous gathered hem adds drama and sweetness to the humble tank. Taimi is hip length, hitting that sweet spot for mid-high waisted bottoms without swamping them. It is slightly longer in the back, leaving you feeling fully covered.

Spaghetti Western Ornella Top

Great for: Stripes (and the playful sewers!)

Do you like to have fun with your projects? Maybe you love sewing something with completely different details that challenge you? If this is you, I recommend taking a look at Ornella. Sew it up in stripes to highlight the cutout, or choose a contrasting fabric to make the bralette feature stand out.

Christine Haynes Verano Tank Top and Dress

Great for: Variety

If you are keen to sew a tank top, but are more of a dress person than a separates person, this is a good buy as you get both. The mix-and-match nature of this pattern makes it a versatile design. I've seen a number of the lovely linen co-ord sets on the high street with a button-front tank, so if that's what you have been eyeing up, this is the one for you. There is also a sleeves add-on pattern so you can make even more items from your pattern purchase.

Fibre Mood Zen Top

Great for: Trendsetters

Balloons aren't just for birthday parties. They work just as well on hems. We've seen lots of them popping up this season on trousers, skirts, jackets, and tops, so this is the tank of choice for fashionistas. This pattern is fully lined, so it will look beautiful on the inside too.

So what do you think? Are you ready to put your sewing skills to work and make the ultimate summer item? If you want to sew a matching set, I recommend checking out a couple of blog posts that have some great options.

I made the Santorini top with the Emily culottes from Itch to Stitch for a lovely co- ord set. Both were lovely patterns, easy to follow for an intermediate sewist like me.

That Santorini pattern looks like a real gem. At first I thought it seemed terribly pricey for such a small garment especially as I must convert it to Aussie dollars. Then I looked at the consideration and detail that goes into it. That and a matching skirt and you’ll have a perfect outfit. Super list! Thank you.
