TOP 10 BAG SEWING PATTERNS

TOP 10 BAG SEWING PATTERNS
Kate Underdown

Sometimes it’s quite nice to mix it up and sew something other than garments. Something useful that you will get loads of mileage out of. Why not dip your toe into bag-making? Sewing your own bags will teach you new skills and will provide you with an excellent gift option that doesn’t require knowing somebody’s measurements or style. Bags have been a very popular addition to the shop so we thought it was about time we rounded up our top ten patterns for making your own bag. Enjoy!

Matchy Matchy Stash Pocket Tote – the scrappy one

Who here has an annoying pile of scraps they don’t know how to use up? This bag is the answer to your overflowing remnant problem! The Matchy Matchy Stash Pocket Tote is a fully lined tote bag with a handy outside pocket. It’s the perfect scrap buster and looks great in a patchwork style or single fabric. This is a quick and satisfying sew that you will reach for again and again.

Noodlehead Range Backpack  the daily use backpack

I am a huge convert to carrying a backpack for daily use. It’s much kinder to your back and shoulders and allows you to carry all the things you might need for a busy day. The Noodlehead Range Backpack is a fantastic option if you want to invest your time sewing a bag you can use every day. The foldover top and closure keep things secure, while the front zippered pocket keeps essentials within easy reach. The pattern also features adjustable straps, an interior slip pocket, and hang loop.

Juliana Martejevs Yasmin Bag  best for beginners

If you want to sew your first bag, a simple tote is a great place to start. You might want to elevate your make so it stands out from the other totes you have lurking around the house, so my pick is the Juliana Martejevs Yasmine Bag. Bridgerton has intensified the trend for ruffles, not just on garments but on accessories too and this detail makes this pattern a little bit special! Yasmin includes two sizes and a video tutorial instead of written instructions which is great for newbie sewers.

Grainline Studio Town Bag knitting-lovers choice

As a passenger, do you like taking crafty projects on planes, trains and automobiles? I certainly do! The Grainline Studio Town Bag is a great everyday do-it-all project bag, no matter what project you have on the go. It has a drawstring closure and plenty of interior pockets for stashing all your project bits and bobs. I must make one!

Noodlehead Sandhill Sling  the trendy one

If you want to sew a trendy and practical bag, this bestselling pattern would be my recommendation. The Noodlehead Sandhill Sling has a convenient sling design that allows for easy access when you need it, but it’s out of the way when you don’t. I really appreciate a bag that doesn’t feel like a drag to carry around. It’s compact yet roomy enough for the essentials and the adjustable strap makes it comfortable to wear.

Simplicity Clutch Bag SP113  the freebie

Want to try your hand at bag-making before you fully commit to a design? Why not try a free sewing pattern? The Simplicity Clutch Bag SP113 is a FREE beginner-friendly lined clutch bag pattern with envelope design that has a snap fastener closure. It’s great for nights out and special occasions.

Lou Orth Zip It, Divide It Basket – the organiser

One of my favourite bags in the shop is the rather useful Lou Orth Zip, Divide It! Basket. This fun-to-make storage basket features handles and a zippered divider, perfect for a whole range of items, especially crafty projects and supplies. The zip divider keeps smaller items safe, and it is fully incorporated into the lining so there’s no little gap at the bottom of the basket.

Kylie & the Machine Mule Tote – the carry-all tote

Need a supersized bag for your errands and carting around all your (and your kids) stuff? Try the Kylie & The Machine Mule Tote – a fun and practical project for new and experienced sewists alike. It features enclosed seams and can be made in a standard or maxi size. The standard size makes a great shopping tote, and the maxi size is perfect as a beach bag.

Merchant & Mills Francli Day Pack – for happy hikers

What about a bag fit for adventure? If you like to do a spot of hiking and need a thoroughly practical bag, take a look at the Merchant & Mills Francli Day Pack! This useful bag has water bottle pockets and an internal laptop pocket. Find it tricky hunting down all the bag hardware required? Check out this kit with all the hardware you need to make the Francli Day Pack.

Dhurata Davies Minnie Bag – the travel companion

If you’re up for making your own bag, I can’t think of one more useful than the new Dhurata Davies Minnie Bag. This essential crossbody bag will help you carry your travel or daily essentials in style. Choose from a rectangular silhouette or a distinctive circular shape, adding a unique touch to your outfit. Your bag will have two handy front pockets, an inner pocket, and a removable strap for hands-free exploration. Designed with care and attention to detail, Minnie is underlined with bias-bound inner seams, adding durability and a professional finish to your creation.
