Buy the Mule Tote sewing pattern from Kylie & The Machine. Your new favourite tote bag features enclosed seams and can be made in a standard or maxi size – or both! The standard size makes a great shopping tote, and the maxi size is perfect as a beach bag. The Mule Tote is a fun and practical project for new and experienced sewists alike.

Hack: The original pattern uses flat felled seams. Additional instructions (and a print-at-home corner template) are now included for alternative seam finishes that can be used to construct the bag more quickly. This means you have more fabric options too, like upholstery weight fabrics and heavy canvas (which would be too thick for the flat felled seam method).

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: The copy shop pattern doesn’t include the corner template for the hack (print-at-home only, 1 page).

Suggested fabrics: As this pattern uses flat felled seams, light to midweight woven fabrics are required. Cotton twill, light canvas, chambray, quilting cotton, gingham, light duckcloth, barkcloth, poplin, broadcloth, light corduroy, mid-weight linens, nylons such as ripstop.

Fabric requirements:

Standard: 140-150 cm (48-55″) wide fabric: 80 cm (32″/0.89 yd) // 110-135 cm (36-46″) wide fabric: 80 cm (32″/0.89 yd).

Maxi: 140-150 cm (48-55″) wide fabric: 1 m (39″/1 yd + 3″) // 110-135 cm (36-46″) wide fabric: 1.6 m (63″/1.75 yd).

Sizing: 

Standard: Finished measurements: 32 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm (12.6″ x 12″ x 6″).

Maxi: Finished measurements: 42 cm x 40 cm x 22 cm (16.54″ x 15.75″ x 8.66″).
