ICONIC PATTERNS WE SHOULDN'T OVERLOOK IN 2026

I am guilty of channelling my enthusiasm into shiny new things. The novelty of the 'now' is more relevant today than it ever has been, with short-form content taking up most of our attention. Sewing isn't immune to this, and I've been spending my week thinking about iconic patterns that have stood the test of time.

By sewing your own clothes, you can break free from relying on what's in the shops, avoid following current trends, and create your own style. Thinking back on iconic designs that continue to be bestsellers, I couldn't resist sharing my finds.

So, I have rounded up 10 iconic sewing patterns, loved by many, that we shouldn't overlook in 2026. I've made three of them. What's your sewing hit rate?

Anna Allen Anthea Blouse and Dress

Puff sleeves took the sewing world by storm, and Anthea was, and still is, the pattern to make. Wear the dartless design tucked into jeans or loose and breezy. Anthea looks dreamy sewn in linen fabric or a cotton lawn. I have personally made this pattern several times, and I know I will always go back to it. Whether it be the blouse or dress version, I have loved each and every one.

Closet Core Patterns Pietra Pants and Shorts

This was the first pull-on trouser sewing pattern I remember that delivered that elusive flat front and elasticated back. Giving you the best of both worlds, the flat front, high-waisted silhouette is finished with the comfort of an elastic waist in the back. Featuring lengthening panels in the front with slanted hip pockets and a hidden waist stay, you’ll never want to take them off. I have made them tapered view (and loved them!), and should definitely sew a wide-leg pair this year.

Paper Theory Patterns Zadie Jumpsuit

The Zadie Jumpsuit is also probably the most reviewed pattern in the shop, and they are overwhelmingly positive (so you know there must be a reason!). The relaxed and easy-to-wear one-piece that comes with the option of wide 3/4 length sleeves or sleeveless with a dropped shoulder. It wraps around the body and fastens with a tie, so there is no need for buttons or a zip – making it quick and easy to sew, and quick and easy to get on and off.

Friday Pattern Company Unisex Ilford Jacket

Ilford is the ultimate workwear jacket or 'shacket' if you want to use the fancy fashion name. The unisex fit makes this a very useful pattern to have in your stash as you can make them for loved ones (if they are lucky!). Choose make the longer version in a lightweight fabric to wear as a layering piece or the shorter option a heavyweight cotton for utility vibes. The simple shape makes it very customisable so you can get creative adding more features if you wish - including a ton of pocket options to pick from.

It really is a “choose your own adventure” type of pattern that incorporates your design sense into the project. It was the first jacket I sewed, and I was thrilled with the result!

Sizing: XS – 7X (approx. UK 6 – 34)

Helen's Closet Gilbert Shirt

If you are a shirt-making novice looking to dip your toe into sewing your own shirt, this is a great pattern to begin with. It has held its place in the bestsellers for years now, and I can see why. The camp collar is easier to sew than a traditional one, and the back yoke and collar are finished using the ‘burrito method’. Helen's instructions are always excellent, so you are in safe hands.

Named Kielo Wrap Dress and Jumpsuit

You cannot go wrong with an all-time bestseller, and Kielo is it. This simple-to-sew dress has a fantastic silhouette, cinching you in at the waist. Choose this design, and you'll find two large front and back pieces and long ties that make up this pattern. Simply wrap the ties around you, and you’re done. Its simple construction and dramatic shape, and the fact that it is extremely comfortable to wear, make it a firm favourite. Oh, and you get a jumpsuit version too!

True Bias Lander Pants

I remember this pattern taking the sewing world by storm. It allowed sewists to sew their own custom trousers, completed with a button fly. It was an excellent skill-building project that people couldn't get enough of. The shape is still bang-on trend, proving Landers have a timeless appeal. The design includes front and back patch pockets, belt loops, and a straight fit through the legs. You can sew them as full-length, modern crop, or shorts.

If you would prefer a zip fly, an expansion pack is available.

The Hinterland Dress offers a timeless, comfortable, and elegant silhouette with versatility and layering at the heart of the design. Sew House Seven Toaster Sweaters

This two-in-one pattern is probably the most popular sweater pattern we have in the shop. Season after season, when the temperature drops, we see Toaster creep back into the bestsellers. The Toaster Sweaters come with lots of different options to mix and match to sew your dream jumper. And, yes, you will be toasty in it. It is an absolute must for anyone who sews their own clothes.

Merchant & Mills Trapeze Dress

The earliest release on our list, the Trapeze Dress, is a timeless option that you will get so much use out of. If you're a fan of clean lines and minimalist design, this pattern is the perfect base for you. Make it for winter in Harris tweed teamed with a chunky brogue, in a bold block print or in a washed linen for summer. Try it in denim or cord for a workwear look. It is endlessly versatile.

Celebrating their 15th anniversary and their very first pattern, Merchant & Mills came up with seven different ways to transform the Trapeze Dress. Grab the Trapeze pattern additions to get more out of your pattern.
