BOOK REVIEW: BUILDING THE PATTERN BY SAARA & LAURA HUHTA

BOOK REVIEW: BUILDING THE PATTERN BY SAARA & LAURA HUHTA
Kate Underdown

We are absolutely delighted to chat to you about the new book from the the dream team that run indie sewing patterns company Named Clothing. This is the second book from Saara and Laura, their first book 'Breaking the Pattern' (you can read the review here) was a firm favourite amongst the sewing community.

Their second book Building the Pattern focuses on making alterations to your pattern to get a fantastic fit. There are 6 patterns included with the book, these come on folded sheets at the back. They patterns pieces are overlapped, so the patterns will need to the traced off. The upside of this is that each pattern piece is in a different colour so it's really easy to work out. The patterns come in a UK 6-22. With the six basic patterns there are variations on each meaning there are a total of twenty items to choose from.

Take a look inside..

The first quarter of the book is dedicated pattern alterations, showing you practical tips to sort out core fitting issues. Everything from bust problems, waist issues and getting the fit right on trousers. This section is really thorough well laid out and stuffed full of useful  info. Whatever your sewing level you'll find this section useful.

The rest of the book is dedicated to the patterns and variations. It starts with a page of line drawings of the the six patterns and their variations.

Then we move onto the making part of the book. The layout is fantastic, each pattern has a double page spread, showing the finished garments. Then a page with the layout plans and size chart, these are all nice and big and easy to read.

Then we move on to the instructions. If you've even sewing with a Named Clothing pattern then the layout is very similar. Nice clean and simple drawings and well written instructions - just what you want!

These are indispersed with lifestyle shots of the garments and also for the slightly more complicated parts there are photos too.

We absolutely love this book, it's fantastic value for money (£18.00) and a hive of sewing and fitting information.
