Do you do a whole load of research when hunting for your next sewing project? Falling down the rabbit hole of sewing possibilities is fun – a lot of fun in fact – but it is time-consuming. As somebody who loves to read a shortlist, I’d be doing you a disservice to not pay it forward and share some of the most-loved gems in the sewing world. We’ve had a few requests for a ‘best of’ series, so we’re kicking off with the most popular garment category – dresses. Read on if you’d like to discover what our all-time bestselling dress sewing patterns are…

One of our most reviewed patterns, the Named Kielo Wrap Dress is a much-loved sew. The pattern is interesting, with two large front and back pieces and long ties that make up this pattern. Simply wrap the ties around you and you’re done. Its simple construction and dramatic shape, and the fact that it is extremely comfortable to wear, make it a firm favourite. Oh, and you get a jumpsuit version too.

Sizing: EU 32 – 56 (approx. UK 4/6 – 28)

If you are partial to a dramatic sleeve and love a simple silhouette, you are going to take to the Anthea Dress… if you haven’t already that is. Wear the dartless design cinched in with a belt or loose and breezy. Anthea looks dreamy sewn in linen fabric or a cotton lawn. I have personally found myself unable to stop sewing this pattern. Whether it be the blouse or dress version, I have loved each and every make.

Sizing: 00 – 22 (approx. UK 6 – 22/24)

A very well-known pattern in the sewing community is the Wilder Gown. This whimsical dress is easy to sew, breezy to wear and full of customisation possibilities. The gown is pulled in and tied at the neckline creating a pretty, gathered feature. Sew it short, long or even as a blouse. I’ve made each of these options and they are some of my favourite handmade things, perfect for date nights where you want to enjoy your dinner in comfort!

Sizing: XS – 4X (approx. UK 6 – 28)

If you look for patterns that span the seasons, this one is for you. The Hinterland Dress offers a timeless, comfortable, and elegant silhouette with versatility and layering at the heart of the design. Featuring three sleeve options, partial and full button-down plackets, a customisable length, and in-seam pockets, you can create a dress that serves you. It’s also easily modified for maternity and nursing.

Sizing: US 0 – 34 (approx. UK 6/8 – 32/34)

Are you looking for a great sewing pattern for beginners? Perhaps easy sewing projects are your jam? This is a nice, straightforward sew that works with so many things in your wardrobe. The York Pinafore features an easy-fitting cocoon shape, a choice of two necklines and two styles of pockets. Helen’s Closet instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow so it will be a joy to sew.

Sizing: 0 – 34 (approx. UK 6 – 34)

The Victory Patterns Sofia Dress and Top is quite a modular pattern, so there are lots of ways you can make it up and customise it to sew your dream dress. It’s a great option for summer and is special enough to wear to a wedding or afternoon tea. Sofia features an elasticised, shirred bodice that allows for easy fit and wear. You will find full instructions on how to sew shirring. Choose from three garment styles along with several sleeve options, which can be mixed and matched to create different looks.

Sizing: UK 6 – 18 or UK 16 – 32

If you like to mix it up and flit between sewing plains and prints, this dress shows both of them off beautifully. The Fringe Dress is a simple, everyday design that has a button-up front, elbow sleeve and sleeve tab. If you aren’t a fan of sewing buttonholes you can pick the pullover view. Both views come include two cup sizes to help you get a great fit. There’s also a cute mini version of the pattern for kids.

Sizing: US 0 – 30 (approx. UK 8 – 30) with A/B and C/D bust cup options

The Sicily Dress is a romantic bias-cut slip dress that you will love. It’s a pattern that seems to be adored by all who make it which is a rare thing. It’s wedding-guest-ready and is ideal for a summer ceremony but can be styled with a faux fur jacket or bolero for a winter wedding. The longer-length view sits in the ‘evening wear’ category, so could be your does-all-the-fancy-events dress!

SizingA – J (approx. UK 6/8 – 28)

Love a shirt dress? Prefer your dresses to be unfussy? The Olya Shirt Dress is relaxed and loose-fitting with traditional details and a classic silhouette. The best bit of Olya is the unusual and innovative style lines. It is a fascinating project to sink your teeth into and one that will stay with you for a long time. I love the styling suggestion of wearing it open over an outfit like a duster. It gives it versatility and options to mix your wardrobe up a little!

Sizing: UK 6 – 28 (approx. UK 6 – 30)

The Fabric Godmother Peony Dress steals the show. It’s the dress we have all been waiting for and FG nailed it! Made in a silk or pretty viscose crepe, it’s the perfect special occasion dress, or made in a linen or babycord you can dress it down for daytime. The pattern also includes a fantastic couture technique to add shoulder puffs to your dress.
