Hollyburn Skirt

I recently made the Hollyburn skirt pattern by Sewaholic in our beautiful cotton lawn digital print fabric (both available on our site). The instructions were incredibly easy to follow as always and it was a nice, easy sew.

The only problem I had was getting the waistband to fit the skirt due to the skirt pieces stretching. The pattern instructions acknowledge this may happen and suggest easing the fabric in. I thought this would create extra bulk at the waist (no thanks!) so I took 1/2″ out of the front and side seams to get it to fit. If I made it again I would stay stitch the skirt pieces before sewing them together whereas the pattern instructions suggest doing this later down the line by which time I found they had already stretched.

Following my adaptations detailed above the skirt fits like a dream and I absolutely love it! It looks more feminine than I expected and I think it hangs beautifully thanks to the centre front seam, which is a really nice design feature.

I chose to line it and therefore fastened it with an invisible zip up to the waistband and then sewed a button and rouleau loop to fasten the waistband.

The length is perfect on me (IMHO) and I am 5′ 6″. I chose to sew a much narrower hem than suggested by the pattern (1/4″ rather than 1″) because I felt a narrower hem would suit the flared shape better.

There really is nothing I don’t like about this skirt!

I would rate the pattern suitable for a beginner and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

I cut a size 8 based on my waist measurement. Even though the hip size for this waist size was way bigger than my hips I didn’t grade the pattern in at the hips. I’m glad I didn’t grade it in because I love the fullness of the skirt.

I am a size 8-10 in RTW clothes and would describe my body shape as ‘athletic’.
