Superb bomber jacket great for so many fabrics

A review of New Look Jacket N6545

This New Look bomber jacket 6545 was a corker and I absolutely love it, eagerly waiting for the weather to warm up. I made this on a weekend workshop with Bristol School of Sewing and Textiles which luckily for me is only 10 mins down the road. I didn’t have to reference the instructions at all, and thank goodness because they didn’t look that easy to understand.
I quite fancied making a Ted Baker style one but I had this gorgeous embroidered chambray in my stash and am super pleased with how it turned out. It’s lined with bremsilk which feels so nice on the skin.
This fit well without any adjustments – an absolute shock for me. I often need to do an upper rounded back adjustment which I’d consider on a future version but it’s pretty much spot on as is. My measurements fell around size 12 but I cut size 8 based on the finished garment measurements and it’s just right for a light layer underneath.
I think I did well to avoid flower boob and stagger the motifs on the front, but I made the back symmetrical. This was my first time sewing with cuffing which was easier than I thought, although fiddly around the sleeves. The stretchiness is very forgiving though.
We added interfacing down the front to help stabilise the zip. I would also add interfacing to the pocket openings which I often think about when I’ve finished a project but keep forgetting at the time.
The zip is about 1cm short at the bottom of the jacket but I don’t think it’s that noticeable. I had intended to fold up the ribbing a little more so they ended at the same point, but I just forgot by the time I got to that bit (my forgetfulness seems to be a bit of a theme!).
I’d love to make more of this pattern in different fabrics, I’ve seen a couple in lace which look amazing, brocade and silk would also look fab. I’d also think about making a cropped version to finish at the waist. This pattern is definitely a keeper.
