I’m a sucker for anything that reminds me of the 90’s. The music, the fashion, the movies, the pop culture. That’s why I am happy to add some 90’s vibes into my wardrobe right now. The 90’s were not just a decade, they were a state of mind! I wrote a post on my cargos I love them so much So I’m proud to share with you my latest sewing project: a pair of cargo pants. I followed a wonderful pattern by Forest and Thread, which you can find in Tauko magazine Issue 8. The pants are comfortable and in my opinion, quite trendy, but I learned a valuable lesson: choose a heavier weight fabric for this kind of garment! It will save you a lot of trouble and frustration when sewing cargo pants.
Sewing Cargo Pants – Pattern Details & Top tips
- Size up, cargo pants are meant to be slouchy and comfy. Check the seam allowances.
- Use your imagination! As I found there is a lack of published images to check for correct pocket placement. Instagram is your friend
- Use a sturdy fabric, don’t be like me and use a double gauze, (what was I thinking?) choose a lightweight denim, chambray would be perfect or even a heavy linen, but nothing too stiff. If you want a silky, drapey pair perhaps leave off all but one of the pockets?
- The length was perfect as I used the tie hem option. I am 5ft 6″ but the waist came up small.
- IMO a well cut pattern, but the information could have been more detailed.
- Don’t skip the interfacing. It made a huge difference to the end result.

- The summer fabric I used was a baby blue Double Gauze from Minerva
