Buy the Lahja Unisex Dressing Gown sewing pattern from Named. The Lahja is a casual, straight-cut unisex garment. The Finnish word ‘lahja’ means ‘gift’ and, as the name suggests, these dressing gowns are a great gift either for your friend or yourself!
This pattern includes both short and long versions. The shorter knee-length gown has cropped sleeves. The longer version extends to midleg and has full-length sleeves. Both variations feature large patch pockets and a belt fastening.

Suggested fabrics: Choose a non-stretch fabric. Depending on the desired look, choose a coarse fabric, for example natural linen, terry cloth, or honeycomb fabric or, for a lighter version, pick a drapey rayon or satin. The sample garments are made from stonewashed linen.
Fabric requirements: The fabric requirements include a 5% allowance for shrinkage. Note that the fabric consumption may be greater for fabrics with a pattern and for fabrics that need to be cut in one direction.
Short: 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 260 – 305 cm (2 7/8 – 3 3/8 yd) // 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 310 – 465 cm (3 3/8 – 5 1/8 yd).
Long: 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 295 - 370 cm (3 1/4 – 4 yd) // 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 375 – 545 cm (4 1/8 – 6 yd).
Sizing: XS – XXL (approx. UK 4/6 – 26, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer's size chart and finished garment measurements.
Notions: Short: Fusible interfacing, 125 cm (1 3/8 yd) // Long: Fusible interfacing, 155 cm (1 3/4 yd).

My dad doesn’t often ask me to make him something, but when he asked for a robe he could wear out of the shower I instantly thought of this pattern.
I made the mistake of printing it A4 which I wouldn’t recommend as there are LOTS of pages, if I make one for myself in the future I’m definitely going down the A0 route.
Other than that though this pattern was fantastic, it came together really quickly and easily and my dad was thrilled. I used a waffle towelling fabric and it worked perfectly, it’s one of those fabric that gets softer the more you wash it, so 3 years later it is still going strong and softer than ever.
The following year I made my mum one using the same pattern and my dad told me she kept nicking his so she needed her own. I made hers in a lovely fleecy fabric as she covets warmth.
They both love them and wear them all the time, I love making presents that I know will be appreciated and this is such a great pattern, this year everyone gets a Lahja

This is the third one I’ve made. I have a long one in cotton waffle and I made the same for my son-in-law for his birthday.
It’s definitely my most worn item of clothing and I wanted a summer version.
I made a size small in accordance with my bust measurement, the ‘short’ version with the ‘short’ sleeves. It’s the perfect summer length for my 5 ft3 frame.
It is an oversized pattern so definitely size down if you are in between sizes.
The Lahja instructions are clear and easy to follow. I made this up in no time at all. It’s a great beginner pattern.

This is the first garment I have seen in over 30 years. I chose something quite simple to get me started again. I found the convenience of the pdf pattern good in theory but did not enjoy printing it all out and sticking it together. I also noticed that the pattern did not meet correctly at the shoulders, but think this was the printing process. The sizing is also a bit deceptive. The smallest size has a bust size of 42” which was a good size for me but one the pattern was cut it was very narrow around the waist and legs. I made adjustments and managed to produce something I am very happy with. I would use pdf patterns again for the cost and the convenience. My husband has asked for one now so it’s on my list, a very long list.

This was my 2nd make of the Lahja (first was for my husband). This time I made the Women's version (shorter) - size Women's large. For some reason the layout of the pieces on the fabric was very tight and I had a real struggle to get it out of the fabric I had bought but managed it in the end. However I discovered that the collar piece wasn't as long as needed to go round the collar of the dressing gown so I had to make the dressing gown shorter by about 4cm. If I make it again I will check the pattern pieces together (the long version that I made did not have this problem). Same challenge with the stitch in the ditch on the outer collar not catching all the fabric inside so I had to redo several pieces having used wonder tape to keep the fabric in place. I didn't interface the belt or the collar this time as the fabric is lightweight and I wanted a more drapey kimono type effect.
