Great introduction to jean-making.

A review of Megan Nielsen Dawn Jeans

This is my first ever attempt at making jeans. Like many of us sewists, I felt a bit nervous about making jeans. This pattern, with its clear instructions, has helped me a lot in conquering my fear of jeans. Megan really holds your hands throughout the project, with lots of tips and tricks to help you along the way.

I made mine in View B (straight leg version), in size 12, with added 1 inch on the waist (pattern size 12: W30 H40, my body measurements: W31 H39). The fabric I used is 8oz washed denim, 100% cotton, that I purchased from Fabric Godmother UK. I did swayback and flat butt adjustments. The result isn’t 100% perfect, I still need to tweak the fit as I find my jeans still a bit loose, but that was more my doing rather than the pattern. I wasn’t sure how much “snug allowance” I should give during the fitting so that after the jeans are broken in they wouldn’t be too loose. The pattern does say that the jeans should be snug when first made, just like the RTW ones. I just needed to make mistake(s) first to learn, I guess haha.

All in all, I loved and enjoyed this project very much, as well as my (first and definitely not last) finished jeans. If like me, you’ve never tried making jeans before, I would whole-heartedly recommend this pattern. Even for those who’ve tried, I’d also recommend trying this one, it is such a great pattern. I can see why so many people love it on Instagram.
