Fantastic wardrobe staple.

A review of Kate’s Sewing Patterns Merilyn Sweater

Reviewed by Mel Forrest on 25th March, 2022

This is a really great pattern – nice and simple for beginner sewists and a super quick sew for more experienced makers. I used a beautiful ocean green sweater knit for my project from Atelier Jupe – believe it or not this fabric is made entirely from recycled textile surplus! It has a lovely drape and is nice and cosy, so it was very well-suited to the Merilyn pattern.

I haven’t used one of Kate’s Sewing Patterns before, but I thought the instructions were really clear and well-illustrated. One thing I did notice which might be tricky for people that need to grade between sizes is that each size has a separate pattern file rather than nested layers – just something to bear in mind if you buy one of Kate’s patterns. I made a straight size 36 and I really like the fit.

The only slight change I made to the pattern was to stabilise the shoulder seams with a bit of ribbon as my fabric doesn’t have the best recovery and I didn’t want it to stretch out and lose its shape over time. If I made the sweater again I don’t think I would change anything – I absolutely love it and have worn it so many times already! You can see more photos of my sweater over on my blog here if you are interested.
