Debra Dress

There are some gorgeous patterns in the issue 13 of Fibremood. I have made this Debra Dress and The Molly Jacket so far. Both have been a great success. This is made with a wonderfully soft smooth french terry from Guthrie & Ghani. The dress can also be made with a woven fabric so very versitle. I have to admit to copying the idea of using such a fabric when looking for inspiration. I loved the idea of mixing up the stripe direction to create interest. I somehow managed to get this dress out of just 1.5 meters. I traced the pattern from the sheets in the pack. I’m really not a fan of doing this, but got on and used a double tracing wheel to add seam allowance as I went. It’s all quite a faff! Not all areas have the same allowance so there’s a lot cross referencing to do. Paper everywhere! I probably need to make a few of these to make that pain worthwhile.

Anyway the sewing was very straightforward. No problems with the instructions. In the magazine they are brief and diagrammatic, but on the Fibre Mood website there is more depth and it came together well. I have never used a neck line facing on a knit fabric before and that turned out very neat. I top stitched it down too which looks nice. I was short on fabric for sleeve length so added cuffs in contrasting strip/grain to get a bit more length. The only other adjustment I made was to use woven pockets. This was purposeful as I thought they would be more stable and prevent sagging. I used a scrap of cotton chambray.

This will be a well worn dress over the summer months I’m sure. Very easy to style! Pumps and Leggings for chilly days. Perfect staycation out to lunch dress with some big jewellery and sandals too.

Highly recommended. The whole issue is to swoon over!
