A win win of comfort and style

A review of Paper Theory Patterns Zadie Jumpsuit

I have long lusted after this pattern and finally got round to it, and what an absolute joy it is. It is comfy and yet looks so put together, an outfit in itself.

I found the neck binding a bit tricky around the tight curve at the waist, and more so because I had aligned my belt too high before repositioning it. I used form tape interfacing rather than stay stitching here. I opened up the binding, sewing it to the wrong side first having seen this advice on various other blogs, and I handsewed it at the crotch end for more control after unpicking a couple of untidy attempts. I put strips of interfacing at the pocket openings since the brilliantly large sized pockets will get used a lot.

I posted for advice on The Fold Line Facebook group to ask about finishing my seams, since the fabric was gifted by my sister and I wanted it to look pretty on the inside too. Consensus was that French seams would be too fiddly on the 1cm seam allowance, and I ended up doing a combo of various other advice. I did Hong Kong binding with the actual fabric, some with Liberty lawn and some which were getting a bit bulky were overlocked. Poor planning on my part, but it got the job done.

As for the fit, I attended a workshop at Bristol store Like Sew Amazing to get the pattern fitted, making a few adjustments afterwards to slim down the legs and shorten the back rise. As usual, I put together a separate blog post detailing my fitting adjustments and toiles here:

I noticed on my finished jumpsuit that the inseams were twisting forwards a little. Having consulted The Fitting Book by Gina Renee Dunham, this may be because the trouser part needed balancing, possibly something I upset when I shortened the back rise, so I’ll have a fiddle with this for iteration no. 2 (there will definitely be another!).

I used Japanese gold metallic cotton from Japan Crafts which is absolutely gorgeous. I have put together a blog post with a huge amount of detail and photos (35+ in all!).

There can’t be too many that haven’t made this pattern yet, and I’m glad to have finally joined this awesome party!
