A nice pattern deserves better instructions!

A review of The Patterns Room Joan Jacket

I actually have The Fold Line to thank for this jacket, because I’d never heard of the pattern before I saw it featured in a newsletter a little while ago!

I made the collarless version of the jacket and used the optional patch pockets, because you always need pockets! My main fabric is a boiled wool, and it’s lined in spotty viscose.

In many ways the pattern is good – it’s a great basic style, it seems to be well-drafted and it came out true to size for me.

Unfortunately I think it’s let down a bit by the instructions – they’re quite brief in places, and I don’t think they actually ever tell you to sew the lining pieces together. They’re also phrased slightly awkwardly so they’re not always that easy to follow.

If you’ve sewn a lined jacket before, it’s relatively easy to work out what you should be doing (I managed it without too much trouble), but I’m not sure I’d recommend the pattern if you’re not that confident at trusting your instincts a bit!
