Buy the Children's Park Life Parka sewing pattern from Waves & Wild. Park Life is a comfortable and warm zip jacket with a nod to 90s Brit-pop styling! It has a removable hood that attaches with snaps, and the hood has removable faux fur trim. Wadding is added to create shape and add insulation. There are options for welt pockets, zip pockets and patch pockets.

Suggested fabrics:

Main: Most light/medium weight woven fabrics are suitable. Poplin is a surprisingly good choice - it’s easy to sew and being tightly woven it provides protection against light showers. Heavier woven cotton fabrics such as drill also work well. Lightweight babycord would be suitable, but heavier corduroy would be too bulky. For greater water resistance, fabrics such as light oilskin or ripstop are ideal but can be trickier to work with. The yellow coat in the cover photo is light oilskin. The dark blue jacket is cotton poplin.

Lining: Thin polyester lining fabric or similar is required. If you prefer natural fabrics, then silk would be a great alternative though it is obviously more expensive! Cotton poplin could also be used for the lining. Thin fleece could be used as a warmer option for lining the hood but isn’t recommended for the whole coat.

Ribbing: Chunky ribbing with excellent stretch and return.

Wadding/batting: Go thicker (up to 2.5 cm/1") for a warmer coat (if you have a suitable sewing machine), or thinner (down to 5 mm/1/4") for a lighter (and easier to sew) coat. Polyester wadding is generally more durable.

Fabric requirementsYou need one outer fabric, one lining fabric and wadding.

110 cm (43") wide fabric: 110 - 220 cm (1 1/4 - 2 1/2 yd).

140 cm (55") wide fabric: 100 - 190 cm (1 1/8 - 2 1/8 yd).

Ribbing: Maximum of 14 cm (5 1/2"). If using tubular ribbing, you may need extra.

Sizing: 2 – 12 years. Please check the size chart.

Notions: An open chunky zip for the front, tooth size approx. 6 mm (1/4"); a closed regular sized zip for each zip pocket, tooth size approx. 3 mm (1/8"); 10-15 mm (3/8"-5/8") metal snaps for outerwear, 10 snaps for ages 2-8 or 14 snaps for ages 9-12; 20 mm (3/4") wide hook-and-loop tape (Velcro) for pockets, maximum of 15 cm (6"); medium weight fusible interfacing, maximum of 40 cm (1/2 yd); faux fur for hood trim, maximum of 17 cm (7") // Optional: 10 cm (4") drawstring cord or grosgrain ribbon to make a hanging loop.
