Suggested fabrics:
Main fabric: Medium weight woven fabrics are best. Great choices include wool blends, tweed, corduroy, velvet, soft denim. Heavier, stable knit fabrics can also be used. Fabrics with some give to them will be easier to deal with when sewing the curves, especially around the heel.
Contrast heel fabric (reinforced heel option only): Similar weight fabric to main fabric. This piece will remain unfinished around the edge so a fabric that doesn’t fray is preferable.
Padding: 0.5 cm - 1.5 cm (1/4" - 5/8") polyester wadding/batting. Cotton/bamboo/wool batting can also be used but is less durable. It is also possible to use thicker batting. The thicker your batting, the harder it is to sew, but the comfier and cosier the slippers will feel. Beginners may find it easier to use thick fleece instead of batting. The finished slippers will fit a little larger but the sewing process will be easier.
Lining: Medium/thick warm fabrics such as sherpa, teddy, short-pile faux fur, thick fleece.
Sole: Unless you are making slippers for a non-walker, you must use something non-slip for your sole. Faux suede is a great option for beginners. There are also many sewable non-slip fabrics designed specifically for shoes/slippers. In addition, instructions are included for applying a thicker rubber sole to the bottom of your slippers to create a sturdier boot. If you wish to do this you will need contact cement/specialised shoe glue. If you are gluing on a sole, you can use your main fabric for the sole then glue the rubber sole to the fabric at the end.
Fabric requirements:
Main fabric + Lining fabric + Wadding/batting: Toddler, 55 cm x 35 cm (21 5/8" x 13 3/4") // Child, 65 cm x 50 cm (25 5/8" - 19 3/4") // Youth, 90 cm x 50 cm (35 1/2" x 19 3/4") // Adult, 110 cm x 60 cm (43 1/2" x 23 5/8").
Sole: Toddler, 18 cm x 18 cm (7" x 7") // Child, 22 cm x 22 cm (8 3/4" x 8 3/4") // Youth, 25 cm x 27 cm (10" x 10 5/8") // Adult, 30 cm x 35 cm (12" x 13 7/8").
Sizing: Toddler - Adult. Please check the size chart for approx. UK and EU shoe sizes and foot measurements.
Notions: Interfacing may be needed for reinforced heel option (depending on fabric choice); thin ribbon/cord + toggles/cord stops/cord locks for tie option; spray quilting glue is extremely useful but not essential.
