Mad for Madeleine

I've wanted to make the Madeleine pattern for a while but it took me some time to find the perfect fabric for it. I knew I wanted a denim one but it needed to be the right denim. I finally found the perfect denim for it last summer. I'm glad I took my time to find the right fabric because the skirt turned out exactly as I'd envisaged.

It's a wonderful pattern. I enjoyed the making process immensely. I find topstitching very meditative and there's A LOT of that here. Enormous pockets - in fact, I lost my car keys in them the first time I wore it - and gorgeous, unique details like the removable suspenders and the lapped zip make this a very special skirt indeed.

I made a straight size 8 and the fit is perfect. The instructions were clear and very well written. I was a little concerned about inserting the lapped zipper but it all came together without a hitch. I highly recommend this pattern. A few people mentioned that it came up big on the waist but for me it was fine.

I wrote a blog post with more photos and details here.

Top-stitching fans - this one's for you!

I'm pretty sure this is my favourite me-made garment ever. Like, EVER. The combination of special fabric, special design and special details has quickly made this skirt an absolute winner in my wardrobe.

Although it may appear to be a more complex make, it is actually very straightforward to sew. As long as you are confident when inserting zips and attaching waistbands and have the patience to take your time with top-stitching, this is a simple project. If I hadn't have run out of thread, I'm pretty sure I could have finished the skirt in one day.

The fabric I have used is *seriously* special. It's a lightweight wool that I fell in love with on a trip to Merchant and Mills. My lovely husband bought me 2m to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary - for which the traditional gift is... wool! The soft hand and beautiful drape is so perfect for this pattern and I love the neutral colour.

I had no problems whatsoever with the instructions - I did sew the waistband on 3 times, but that was my own stupid fault for not marking the piece correctly or reading the steps properly!

I made the size 4 because I wanted the skirt to be very fitted around my waist and I had also heard that it came up quite big. I'm really pleased with the fit and it's exactly the look I wanted. The only alteration I made was to cut off 1.5" from the length and hem one turn of 3/8"(I am 5'4" for reference.)

The finished skirt is every bit as lovely I hoped it would be! I'm a huge fan of top-stitching, so I thoroughly enjoyed that stage of construction and it gives such a beautiful finish to the pockets. Pockets you can fit your arms in up to your elbows are a winner in my book and I love the versatility of being able to wear the skirt without the suspenders. Now I want to make a deep indigo denim version just like the pattern cover!

This garment is my new favorite!! Oh my goodness this was such a fun make and such a versatile pattern! The review on my blog is here below. I also talk about topstitching and any problems I ran into while making the garment (there weren't many)!
