Buy the Lotta Dress sewing pattern from Tilly and the Buttons. Easy to make, with no fiddly bits, Lotta is a perfect dressmaking project for beginners, or a satisfyingly speedy sew for more experienced stitchers. It has a blousy bodice and flared skirt, cinched in with a narrow elasticated waistline.
Choose between a knee-length or midi-length skirt, with grown-on short sleeves or bracelet-length drop shoulder sleeves, and optional deep patch pockets. To make it even more versatile, you can make this dress in either woven fabric or stretchy jersey.

Suggested fabrics: Light- to medium-weight drapey fabrics such as chambray, viscose (rayon), Tencel (lyocell), double gauze, brushed cotton or crêpe. The short sleeve version can also be made in less drapey fabrics such as linen, cotton lawn and seersucker. More experienced? Try single knit drapey jersey, stretch velvet or light-weight French terry.
Fabric requirements:
150 cm (60") wide fabric: Knee-length, 2.5 m (2 3/4 yd) // Midi-length, 2.8 m (3 1/8 yd).
115 cm (45") wide fabric (sizes UK 6-12 and knee-length skirt only): Knee-length with bracelet-length sleeve, 2.9 m (3 1/4 yd) // Knee-length with short sleeve, 2.5 m (2 3/4 yd).
All sizes of the knee-length dress and sizes UK 6-16 of the midi-length dress will also fit on 140 cm (56") wide fabric. Sizes UK 18-20 of the midi-length dress will fit on 145 cm (58") wide fabric.
Sizing: UK 6 – 24. Please check the designer's size chart and finished garment measurements.
Notions: 0.2 m (1/4 yd) iron-on interfacing (for woven fabrics only, similar weight to your fabric); your waist measurement in 10 mm (3/8") elastic.

This dress is one that doesn't make it back into my wardrobe for long (if at all) after it's been washed and dried... always a good sign!
I opted for the jersey option with longer sleeves.
The TATB block is a really good fit for my frame but I chose not to do my usual sizing. Usually, I would grade 4-5 at the hip but the skirt is generous so I cut a straight 4.
I also added a thermal layer of pointelle for extra warmth. It makes the dress even more cosy!

I have recently ventured into the world of Stretch fabrics and wanted to make a comfy Christmas dress. I made the Lotta dress in a size 3 with no adjustments in 2.5m of this polka dot bubble crepe. The fabric was ideal for the garment and worked up really well.
I liked the pattern very much - it came together very quickly so made for a satisfying sew. I found the neckband difficult but am putting this down to inexperience with stretch fabrics!
The other issue I had is that the sleeve seam being off the shoulder looks quite bulky. I’m not sure if this is an issue with my construction or the pattern, as I had the same issue on the Nora top which has a similar sleeve seam.
Otherwise I am very happy with this dress and would definitely make again! It was ideal for a comfy Christmas lunch with lots of room for pudding.

I must admit I was hesitant when the Lotta pattern was first released. Did I really need another dress pattern in my stash? But then beautiful versions of the dress started popping up on Instagram and I caved and bought the pattern.
I’m so glad I did. It’s a fantastic but simple dress that makes you feel great wearing it. It comes together fairly easily and with the elastic channel it feels so comfortable to wear. There is an option to add patch pockets but in the three versions I’ve made so far I’ve left them off. I worry the patch pockets will change the way it looks and make it feel a bit more casual.
It’s a great pattern for beginners and Tilly has nailed it with the instructions as usual. It only takes a few hours to sew up and the only godly bit I found was feeding the elastic through the channel you create. There’s an option for bracelet length sleeves but I’ve chosen the short sleeve here.
The neckline is finished with a facing that sits nicely once it’s been under stitched. I think you can have a lot of fun with this pattern - I chose to colour block it using toe leopard print fabrics. There are two skirt lengths too - with midi length being the option I went for. It’s been a perfect work wear staple and I can see plenty more in my wardrobe in the future!

I bought this pattern fairly soon after it was released because I'd recently bought a duvet cover in a charity shop and wanted to use it to make a simple-but-not-boring dress to show off the pretty print of the fabric. Lotta fit the bill perfectly!
Lotta is a great dress for beginners - it has no closures or darts so is simple to sew, and the blousy style of the bodice means that it's easier to fit than some other dresses. The instructions are also very detailed so will give you plenty of help along the way.
For more experienced sewists, it's a lovely relaxing project and comes together really quickly.
The sizing is good - I made the size recommend for my measurements and the fit is blousy as intended, but not at all baggy. The only alteration I made was to lengthen the bodice - which is very standard for me.
If you have a particularly large head (I do!), I'd recommend making a toile to check you can get the dress over your head - thankfully I just about can! As I said, I do have a large head though so I wouldn't imagine this would be a problem for many people.
I love the fact that you can make Lotta using woven or knit fabrics, and I think it's the kind of dress that could be really casual or fairly smart depending on what fabric you used or how you styled it. I'll definitely be making more versions!
