Buy the Indigo Top and Dress sewing pattern from Tilly and the Buttons. Cute, comfy and effortlessly stylish, Indigo has no fiddly fastenings so you can throw it on and go. Sew it with classic gathered seams or elevate it to a stand-out piece in your wardrobe with the pretty exposed frill seam.

Indigo has a bodice shaped with bust darts, gently curved empire waistline, and floaty gathered skirt. Make it as a top with a dipped hem ending at the low hip, or as a knee-length dress with a straight hem and pockets (yay!). Choose from three-quarter flounce sleeves or slim-fitting bracelet sleeves. You’ll want to wear one every day of the week.

Note: An expansion pack (sold separately) is also available for the Indigo Top and Dress. The Indigo Top and Dress Add-on includes pattern pieces and instructions to make a swishy midi dress by adding an extra tier to the skirt, sew short sleeves (with or without an added ruffle), create a gorgeous button back bodice, and make bang-on-trend elasticated puff sleeves.

Great pattern for beginners

Indigo is a very good beginner friendly dress pattern, I have made mine in Jungle viscose print from Good Fabric

I have lowered my bodice by few inches, if you do the same, remember to raise your pocket up by the same amount, otherwise they will be too low.

The dress doesnt have any closures like zips and pockets, so its quite roomy. I dont think it is the most flattering shape on me as i really want to define a waistline on this dress. Next time i would add waist ties to give it some shaping.

Also, i think i need to play around with proportion of the sleeve length, i might shorten them.

I love the skirt and how it swishes when i walk, so overall i think it is a great pattern, just needs tiny bit of adjustment

Fantastic pattern!

I love this pattern! Tilly is known for her easy to understand instructions and this was no different. I used a cotton lawn in a William Morris style fabric to make a formal dress for my graduation. I changed the sleeves slightly by doing the slash and spread technique and also added a lining (I was feeling posh!). Would highly recommend for any skill and I can’t wait to try it again!

Perfect summers dress

It was only when I saw the options others had sewn that I realised this was the perfect summers dress I was after.

I shortened the sleeves and added a ruffle to the dress length.

This is made from cotton lawn and is perfect on a hot day. I’ve also worn it on cooler days with leggings underneath.

Its a while since I’ve sewn a Tilly pattern and although I didn’t use the instructions they are lovely and I’d recommend her patterns to all beginners.

A very versatile, fun pattern

I wasn’t totally sure about this pattern when it was first released, but there are so many beautiful versions out there, and so many hacking possibilities with it I decided to buy the pattern about this time last year. I think part of the reason it has taken me so long to get on and make it is because there are so many options – I bought it with the add-on pack, which includes a short sleeve option, an extra tier for a midi length version, and extra back bodice pieces for a button placket option. I decided to go for the mid length sleeves and midi length skirt, with pockets. I decided not to do the exposed frill seam this time, maybe next time. I like the buttons on the back, but I went for a front button placket because I might need it for nursing when the baby comes. I like the more gathered/cinched in look so I added ties, and I included pockets, of course!
There are some adjustments I would like to make next time I sew this pattern, which I detail in my blog post here

Autumn Indigo Dress

I love this pattern, it is very versatile and is great for beginners with details instructions and step by step photos. The trickiest part is the gathers which although not difficult is a bit time comsuming. I made the size 4 which  which was the size for my body measurements and it fits well, the fabric I used was a linen blend which was easy to work with. Adjustments that I made were adding elastic to the sleeves, adding ties at the waist and adding an extra tier - I think there is an add-on pack for this but I just used what fabric I had left. I have a blog post with more photos and detail: https://wordpress.com/post/jennylovestosew.wordpress.com/1949
