Lovely cosy dress!

Loving my Billie dress! What a lovely pattern. The paper pattern comes with a great instruction booklet with illustrations in colour so suitable for beginner sewers. I made it in an afternoon! I made my dress longer by a couple of inches but otherwise no alterations to the pattern. I made a cowl from left over fabric which is removable and the fabric is cosy French terry. I’m sure I will get lots of wear out of it and have already made the sweatshirt version!

Works really well as a top as well!

Came together really easily for my second knit garment, I’ve been wearing it on repeat as well! Found the balloon sleeve version worked great in a viscose jersey, so my version was more of a top than a sweater.

Billie dress for a tween

I made the Billie sweatshirt for myself around Christmas time and was really pleased with the results. My 11 year old daughter also really liked the pattern. I'm reluctant to buy more children's patterns now as she is usually at the top of the size range so it feels like wasting money, if I only get one use out of it. I thought I would try adjusting the Billie pattern and see how it worked out. It turns out it was the perfect pattern to do some simple adjustments with! I basically cut the smallest size for her (having taken her measurements and shortened the front/back and sleeve lengths at the lines marked on the pattern, by 10 inches.

The fabric was from my large scraps stash, so didn't cost any extra and she absolutely loves this dress!

Brilliant sweatshirt

I made the Billie Sweatshirt version 2 - the top with balloon sleeves. I absolutely love this pattern and I'm in love with those sleeves! It's a relatively simple sew and can be sewn up in an evening or thereabouts.

The only issue I had was sewing the gathered sleeve end onto the cuff. There was a lot of fabric and my overlocker wasn't happy about cutting that much fabric in one go. My solution was to zigzag the sleeves with the sewing machine, cut off the seam allowance with some fabric scissors and then overlock without using the blades. Bingo!

The instructions are ace. I think the Billie sweatshirt will be a wardrobe staple for me.

Happy sewing xx

Not a fan of Billie

I like a statement sleeve so I bought the Billie pattern when it came out.  I made the bell sleeve top version and I felt swamped by the huge sleeves.  Now I love a statement sleeve but these were just too big.  So I took a lot of the width out around the cuff to make the sleeve narrower, and the garment more wearable for me.  The next issue though was that I felt like I was being strangled - the neckband was too high and too tight.  So I took it out, lowered the neckline a bit, and sewed in a new narrower neckband.  So after all that I have a top which is fine, but I don't love it.  I think if I wanted another statement sleeve top I would make the Somerset from Maven Patterns again instead.

What I would say though is that the pattern instructions are as ever absolutely spot on, and the instructions for gathering and attached the sleeves is excellent, and if I make another Somerset I will use the gathering technique from the Billie rather than following the Somerset pattern instructions and using shirring elastic.
